Oslo Biathlon
The individual races took place yesterday - in the women's Makarainen was imperious, Darya Domracheva second, with another good result from Vitkova (CZE) third and Laura Dahlmeier (GER) 4th.
Martin Fourcade won the men's, and a good performance saw Garantichev (RUS) a few seconds behind. Semenov (UKR) was 3rd and Jakov Fak (SLO) 4th, bringing forward the form that he showed in Nove Mesto na Morave. For the weekend, the following races are planned:- Saturday: Men's and Women's Sprints Sunday: Relays. |

The final Bob and Skeleton World Cup of the season is from last year's Olympic Track in Sochi. Despite her two wins last weekend, it doesn't look that Lizzy Yarnold currently in 3rd will be able to overhaul Janine Flock & Tina Hermann for the overall WC, unless they both have absolute 'mares, for Lizzy to beat Janine it would have to be a 7 or 8 place difference AFAIK. For a change, skeleton gets the prime-time slots over the Bob.

The Alpine World Champs finish up this weekend. The British were not much in evidence during the first week, but there have been some good signs this week. Dave Ryding easily won his race in the Team Competition against Italy and two of the other riders lost extremely narrowly. In the women's GS last night Alexandria Tilly was 35th and Charlotte Guest was 43rd. Jack Guest finished 2nd in the FIS Giant Slalom - effectively the B race.
Friday 17:00 and 21:00 Men's Giant Slalom Saturday 16:45 and 21:00 Women's slalom Sunday 16:45 and 21:15 Men's slalom - Dave Ryding going in that. |

Cross Country - some great results for Britain's Andrew Young last week in the U-23 World Champs in Alma-Ata. He made the top 20 in all of his solo races - semi-finalist in the classic sprint, 16th in the freestyle 15k time trial and 16th again in the skiathlon, after having been in the top four at the halfway transition.
World Champs from Falun, Sweden start next week, so the warmup races are from Ostersund, Sweden. Saturday 11:30 Classic Sprint Sunday 08:45 Women's 10k Free 11:45 Men's 15k Free Ski Jumping from Vikersund, Norway Saturday 14:45 Men's individual Sunday 14:45 Men's individual And also on Eurosport, Ski Cross from Ore, Luge from Sigulda and Speed Skating from Heerenveen, and Figure Skating from South Korea |

In the scheme of things, I don't think it would be a major disappointment since she's done it before. The main priority is succeeding Shelley Rudman as World Champion on 6/7 March.

Interesting - didn't know that. On research, it appears that Maya Pedersen was the closest to doing so as she had custody of both global titles (+ Europeans) in 2006, but Melissa Hollingsworth took the World Cup that season.
In any case, the Germans will probably have a dark horse up their sleeve at the WCh. |

Well, if you didn't see it live, don't miss the BBC Red Button repeat on Sunday of the women's skeleton today, turned out to be a bit of classic sporting drama.

Peter Prevc has become the first man to ski 'fly' 250 metres in history. That's 3.5 metres better than the previous record!

really enjoy seeing the long track stuff, would also like to see them doing group races around the big tracks, get some of the short track racers facing the long trackers ![]() watched some of the universiad mens ice hockey final, and saw the giant slalom raceing yesterday |

Good news from the women's slalom in Beaver Creek - Alexandra Tilley was 24th and Charlotte Guest 32nd, so hopefully they will be on the World Cup points trail before the end of the season. As ever, easier to get big results in the major championships than in the week-to-week races.

Hadn't twigged that there was another Short Track World Cup this weekend - Elise Christie took the gold in the 1000m, so finishes second for the season in that discipline.
Also, Liz Stevenson got 12th in the Ski Cross World Cup in Are, Sweden yesterday - she followed the classic Steve Blackburn tactic of getting to the back and hoping that the others would fall. Unluckily for her, only one person did. |

Then there's Pavel Kulizhnikov - just 20 years of age (and has already served a 2-year ban), but his first 500m was within a tenth of the mark that Michel Mulder clocked in the Olympic trials back in 2013. The 2x500m mark (upon which the medals are decided) is well within reach. |

Drama in the men's second 500m - Hein Otterspeer lost control on the second curve and almost collided with Kulizhnikov; he was second after the first run and ended up out of the medals.
Kulizhnikov was nearly two tenths slower compared to his first run, but still becomes the first skater to break the 69-second barrier over 2x500m at sea-level. His winning margin over Olympic Champion Michel Mulder was almost seven tenths. |

More good results: Andrew Musgrave got 15th in the 15k Freestyle Cross Country in Ostersund this afternoon. He's definitely changing his racing style: a lot more controlled in the early stages, and keeping something in the tank to pick up places in the finale. Let's hope it bodes well for the Worlds next week - he definitely overtrained prior to the Olympics last year.
Elise Christie got a bronze in the 500m in the Short Track World Cup in Turkey, adding to her gold yesterday. |

Unfortunately Dave Ryding straddled in the World Championship slalom, won't get a second run.
