I've just been viewing some BARB stats that someone posted on another TV forum and I'm godsmacked to discover that almost 65% of Emmerdales audience is over 50!!

Bang goes the theory that Corrie is the granny soap. It is infact Emmerdale. Who would have thought it!

It isn't that surprising, to me.

Emmerdale is the only soap where I don't miss an episode (I'm under 50), whereas when soaps come up in a discussion, family and friends tend to pull faces when I explain that Emmerdale's my favourite and that I don't watch much of Coronation Street and EastEnders - no matter what their age.

I think Emmerdale is very underrated by all - younger and older viewers. I think people over 50 are more likely to sit down and watch all the soaps from 7 - 9, whereas the younger ones will most likely just stick around for their favourite (like myself). Also, with its older audience, it doesn't help it when it comes to getting some recognition at any award shows. For some reason, no matter what they do, Coronation Street and EastEnders will always "outshine" them even if nothing exciting is going on on their shows - heck, even Hollyoaks gets more recognition despite six more million people watching Emmerdale.

I'm not quite sure why, but Emmerdale tends to have a "dull" tag that it just can't shake off (a bit like EastEnders with its "depressing" tag). Personally, I think it's been a very strong show since Gavin Blyth took over in 2009. It's obviously had a few rough patches in the last five years (especially during Stuart Blackburn's reign) - that's unavoidable with soaps - but no where near as many as the other soaps, and overall it's by far the most consistent.

I don't find it surprising, I have always seen Emmerdale as the older soap, despite the huge changes it has gone through. I don't know why but even now I see it as the show my Nan is more likely to watch (and she's dead)!

Emmerdale did win the Inside Soap award for best soap last year though. So I wonder how on earth they managed that given the age of its viewership. You wouldn't have expected them to vote.
