I tuned into Coronation Street for the first time in a long while recently and was shocked to find how dark it had become. I know that times have changed, but there was no comedy or cheeriness to speak of. All I could see was unlikeable characters, death, misery, prison, lying and of course the thugs who broke into Roy's flat!

Stuart Blackburn does seem to 'darken' the soaps he is in charge of and things have moved on, but I wonder if this is a reason for the falling ratings.

I was thinking the exact same, just a vile street, with vile people, I'm telling you something now, all Stuart Blackburn wants to do is have corrie at number 1 and ahead of EastEnders, that's ALL he cares about!

If by 'dark' you mean predictable, pedestrian, safe, and dull then I agree entirely.

I wouldn't say it was 'Dark' - apart from the obvious Court-case! It still has its lighter moments. But I agree that since Blackburn took over it has become a more depressing series (like he did with Emmerdale). Move him onto EastEenders next - he can polish the lot off!!

I hope ITV can find a quality producer who knows the proper corrie formula of drama and comedy. it's been about a decade since we last had one of those.

I've stopped watching, and tried to get back into it on occasions, but just can't. The bad characters outweigh the good.

Yes. If only we could have more cheery scenes like Fiz and John Stape dragging a rotting corpse around!

That was another crap era the last time Corrie got the balance right was 2004.

Not sure I understand that remark tbh. Corrie is usually at No.1, same as always. Does that, in your opinion, mean that the viewers want 'a vile street with vile people'?

Aww no he can stay away from Eastenders as EE is just back on its feet. Corrie can keep him or he should go to hollyoaks

It's been several years; I suppose I remember the early 2000s most clearly. There were flawed characters, but you actually cared about them. I can't put my finger on exactly how or why this is not the case anymore, but there are hardly any decent people living on the street nowadays. From what I've seen lately, characters are aggressive and unlikeable, with few redeeming features. The acting was also quite poor (I couldn't believe Sean was still in it). I know soaps are supposed to reflect real-lifr, but surely some viewers want a bit of escapism as well?

But Corrie has the highest ratings share out of the four main soaps. ..how is it falling??? EE is more darker than Corrie atm....even Steve and Jim scenes tonight had me in stitches....and Steve suppose to be depressed! !!

Maybe Steves depression is what you meant by ' Dark' OP????

As in there being clashes every 5 minutes between the residents. It's become like Eastenders used to be.
