Charging Cables
TheVoid

The lead for my charger for my Nexus 7 has stopped working. Can I litrally buy ANY USB cable as a replacement?

The power block itself is fine and other leads work perfectly.

Thanks

As far as I know you can use any suitable cable.

I suggest avoiding the thin, cheap ones as the internal wires tend to break especially if the cable is repeatedly coiled / uncoiled / stuffed in a bag.

This official Asus one that came with the nexus 7 has to be wiggled about before charging starts. It's not the port as other cables work fine.

Can using non as Asus cables damage the battery or tablet though?

No.

Just get a good quality one. The problem with mini-usb connectors is that they tend to loosen up after a while. Hence the wiggling to get things started.
Good quality leads have sturdier connectors and therefore last longer.

There are ways a cable can cause damage. For example...

Asus use their own unique non-standard method of wiring a USB socket so only leads wired to that standard will work. Extremely unlikely they would be that stupid though.

The cable you use is wired incorrectly

The cable is badly made and causes a short circuit to occur

However if the cable is wired to the correct spec and sufficiently well made it makes no difference whether it is an "official" Asus one or not.

My Asus 2012 nexus 7 usb micro cable was also faulty out of the box. it took too much wiggleing to get working. used my Kindle cable instead.

You can use any Micro USB cable but the Nexus 7 needs a 2 amp supply to charge quickly. Many of the cheaper USB chargers only supply at around 1 amp.

The USB port on my 2012 Nexus 7 has got so loose from use that I ended up having to buy the docking cradle. The advantage is that my N7 now functions as a great bedside radio and alarm clock.
