Milk Substitutes

I'm having a go at giving up 'Dairy' for a few weeks to see if it makes any difference to eczema

Mainly I just have cheese, ice cream, milk in coffee and a big bowl of cereal every day

I'll have coffee black and give up cheese and ice cream

But what to have on my cereal ?

The first thing I've tried is Almond Alpro........it's very nice, quite thick and creamy. Can't taste any almond in it but it's very acceptable

Does anyone have any recommendations amongst all the other milk substitutes on general sale ?

also...........now winter drawers on (matron !) it'll soon be porridge time......are any of the milk substitutes OK for making porridge ?

I like coconut milk as well. I've also had hemp milk cafe lattes which were good- I think you can get it at Holland and Barrett.

I use Alpro Soya milk (sweetened). It's fine on cereal and in porridge.

Definitely try Koko original coconut milk....£1.39 in Asda or 3 for £3 in Sainsburys at the mo,

Long time organic milk drinker, but have switched due to some IBS, and it's actually not bad in porridge. Bit thin for hot chocolate but OK. Has a very mild taste, and hardly coconutty at all. Works a treat in mash.

Also moved to Alpro yogurt, and the strawberry and vanilla flavours are great. Also recommend trying Swedish Glace ice cream. You only get 750ml for £2 in Asda, but its not far off tasting like ice cream.

Also recommend Asda's free from bread, which is dairy free and is made from rice flour. Can be hard to find, but lovely in sarnies and also as toast.

Finally I like lacto-free cheese, again you can get it in Asda.

Eating all of the above has stopped my IBS (as well as eating more low FODMAP foods) so hope it works with your eczema.

Really wish food manufacturers would stop putting so much lactose and wheat/gluten in their products. They only do it as they're cheap fillers but they can be really tough on digestion.

I had a good look around my local Sainsbury, Tesco and Holland and Barrett today and there's loads of milk substitutes out there.........much more than I thought there would be !

What I really wanted though was coconut milk and that was very elusive

There were the tins of coconut milk in amongst the curry sauces and spices.......but I don't fancy tinned stuff on my shredded wheat

H&B had a Coconut Rice Milk.......Tesco had a Coconut and Chocolate Milk

Nobody seemed to have straightforward coconut milk in a carton

So I bought a pack of Sri Lankan powdered coconut milk..................I'll give it a try tomorrow.

There's rice milk; very tasty, but too sweet for cereal IMO. Unsweetened soy milk is too bland and watery. Not sure if I've tried oat milk. I assume any would be fine for porridge though.

I like unsweetened almond milk with porridge. Not so nice in tea and coffee though.

Make porridge with water, it's perfectly OK and probably more traditional that way.

Rice milk is easy enough to make and you then you can choose to have it unsweetened and/or unflavoured, if that is your preference.

I made it up this morning........10 teaspoons for a quarter litre and put it in the fridge till this evening when it was cereal time.....(I usually have cereals for tea)

Definitely keep a pack of that in the cupboard !

I know a girl who has never ever liked milk since she was an infant
She told me she regularly eats cereals - and only ever has them **with just plain cold water**
This girl who is in her 30's now has gorgeous teeth despite never liking the taste of any milk
I thought the sound of using plain water - was not very appealing at all

Since then I have tried using just water too with various cereals - Cornflakes etc and making porridge
and found that using water on them - is perfectly fine and not at all unpleasant --
it just doesn't look quite as good as it does with a familiar milky liquid

I've got Soya in to try next........it's the sweetened one though

To be honest I didn't notice an unsweetened one so I'll look out for that

I love Koko coconut milk with chocolate - lovely, thin and fresh for drinking, and works well on cereal too.

Oatly oat "milk" is quite nice on cereal and to drink by itself but not so great in tea. I have black coffee anyway.

The only milk substitutes that seem to work ok in tea are soya milks IMO.

For a good ice cream substitute look for Booja Booja - their stuff is vegan and made out of only 3 or 4 ingredients. We have it in our local Holland & Barrett and Waitrose. Expensive, but so, so much better than Swedish Glace.

I've had Oatly and for me it's like drinking strong extremely watery porridge (Yes I know this sounds odd but it's the only way I can describe it) with added oil and it's just far too thick.

The one I've gotten used to is Provitamil Oat Drink, It's not as strong as Oatly and nowhere near as oily (even though it contains oil) or as thick. It still tastes like oats though just doesn't over power.

Alpro Soya strawberry wasn't too bad, but again it's too thick and left a strange after taste in your mouth.

i don't know about anyone else but aside from the soya milk in hot beverages ( tea.coffee), well it just tastes horrid..Soya alternative which is in many shops is good in hot drinks..I can't stand a coffee that has that ''taste'' to it, also some curdle which you have to watch .not nice lol

Dunno if you've found this yet...its in the long life milk section. Tescos, sainsburys and co op all sell it too.

This is the soya ice cream which is rather nice too.

It's just the opposite for me! I like unsweetened soy milk on my cereal/porridge but can't stand it in coffee.
