R&A Rule 27, If it can't be found, it's deemed or declared as lost. Let's not go there though.
Balls are often lost in competitions. You can play a "provisional" from the same spot if you think it's lost, it saves time, but that only becomes "in play," if after search of no more than five minutes, (that's a rule too), the original is agreed by all players of that group the original is considered "lost." You still lose a "shot."
If you find it you have to play it, from wherever it is, except if it's deemed "unplayable" then there's rules about where you can drop it and the penalty incurred. If it's found "out of bounds" that's the same as being "lost."
I play in enough competitions and everyone watches everyone else for possible rule infringements, particularly that one.
