Unlocking iPhone 6
Fred Flintstone
24-10-2014
I have an iPhone 6 locked to Vodafone.
What's the best way to unlock the phone? I read somewhere that unlocking sometimes erases all texts, data, music, etc.
I know that some shops do unlocking and I've seen websites selling unlock codes.
I've never unlocked a phone before so any recommendations please.
I want to be able to remove my Vodafone simcard and use a local simcard when visiting Thailand later this year.

There is no unlocking other than the asking the network to request it be unlocked by Apple (and sometimes people on eBay with access to the Apple server).

The networks won't normally process unlocks for a period after release, and I don't see anyone offering iPhone 6 unlocking on eBay either. You might have to wait a few months, but you could always ask Vodafone and tell them you are travelling.

Pay Vodafone the £19 they ask, assuming you're a contract customer, and they will arrange with Apple. It doesn't erase any data, and once you are told its unlocked (usually by email from Vodafone) then you just put in another SIM card (get a prepay from 3 for example) and when on WiFi put the 3 SIM in (with phone on) and the phone will ask for your apple password to "re-activate". Once that is done you can then swap SIM at any time and you won't get asked for the apple password anymore.

Thanks. Just to confirm I am on a sim only deal with Vodafone. The iphone was bought so it's not on contract.

If you bought the phone direct from Apple then its not locked and never has been. If you bought it outright from a network store (vodafone, EE, O2) then it will be locked. If you bought it from Three it won't be locked.

You're stuck with Vodafone then.

You may be unable to get it unlocked officially. You should try Vodafone, who may refuse as you're not the original owner. You then have no choice but to try some of the less well unknown such as this website I found via Google, it is impossible to know if this is genuine. https://www.officialiphoneunlock.co.uk/

I would rather use one of the eBay unlockers who are able to do the 6, at least you have eBay and PayPal protection to cover you in the eventuality of any possible problem.

For example:

So Three are the only company other than Apple that sells unlocked iPhones. Interesting.

All the phones that Giffgaff sell are unlocked/sim free as well, including iPhones.

It doesn't matter if Vodafone locked the phone. You don't need to be the original purchaser to get the phone unlocked. I did it with my iPhone 4s in 2012. Bought it locked from Cex and put in my own Voda sim. Called them up and they unlocked it for me when I paid the fee and I sold it to my brother who is on 3 when I bought an iPhone 5.

I just recently unlocked a device from Vodafone from the website below as Vodafone refused to unlock it as 3 months worth of payments wasn't fully paid (As it was a Note 4 contract) ;-

https://www.freeunlocks.com/ - Cost me $29.79 USD (£19.17)

I wanted it done there and then and the code was provided within a hour so it was quite fast and i'd no doubt use it again.
