Apps won't update. iPod/iPad.

None of my apps will update. Not automatically or by pressing update. If I press update it just opens up the app. It's like this on both my iPod and iPad

So you're in the App Store app, and looking at Updates? If the listed apps have Open next to them, they've already updated. If not, tap Update All top left of the screen. Check you're signed in to the App Store.

It says update. That's what I click on and it just opens the app & there doesn't seem to be an update all button now

Strange. Are you running iOS 8.1 - the latest release? Might be worth trying a hard reset. Hold down power and home buttons together until screen goes black and the Apple logo appears, then release buttons.
One other thought - in Settings > iTunes and App Store > Automatic Downloads, is Updates turned on?

I haven't updated to iOS 8 cos I just don't have the space. My automatic updates are on . Just don't know what's up with it.

If you have automatic updates ON, then the apps will update automatically without you having to do anything. If you turn updates off then you should be able to update apps manually in the App Store by tapping the Update button. If you don't have space on your devices to update over wi-if, connect to your computer, open iTunes, and you'll be offered the update to iOS 8.1. That way your lack of space shouldn't prevent updating to the latest release.

Ive turned it off now but it's changed to "free" I click and it says "install " and that still just opens the app

Stupid question, but you're definitely looking at the Updates section of the App Store, not Top Charts or Purchased?

Oh yeah definitely. I haven't updated iOS so don't know what's going in with it.

OK, in that case, try a hard reset if you haven't already. If that doesn't work, and assuming you use a PC/laptop to manage your music, update to iOS8 through iTunes on the PC/laptop, and that should fix the problem.
