Letter from Sky this morning saying line rental will go up by £1 a month from December 1. Sky will also start charging £1 a month for Sky voicemail 1571 feature but you can opt-out of it on-line. Sky say BT charge £1.75 a month for voicemail.

Well, at least that should bring about a welcome reduction in the number of people having this anti-social 1571 service on their line !

Telcos should never have been allowed to implement 1571 with the Divert on Busy feature. This is most annoying if you want to speak to someone as soon as possible. It prevents you setting a callback so you have to keep redialling every few minutes. That can be prohibitively expensive if you have to pay for the call, around 25p each time from a landline or 60p from a payphone.

When away from home it's often very expensive to call an 0845 number to check for new 1571 messages and retrieving them. Payphones allow only 60 seconds for the 60p minimum fee and Three PAYG charges a whopping 35p/min instead of just 3p/min for an ordinary call !

An answering machine is a far better solution. You can customise the outgoing messages so callers can be sure they're not leaving a message on a wrong number, you can call in at normal rates to retrieve your messages, and most machines have a 'Call Saver' feature so that you don't even have to pay for the call if there are no new messages.
