Am in Northern Ireland. Got a TalkTalk Huawei YouView box during the week but it seems to be able to tune only one of the two Saorview mixes. Any ideas?

Where in NI? What transmitter? What aerial are you using?

Am in Omagh using Longford transmitter with hi-gain amplified aerial. Probably a weak signal issue, then.

Yes, you need to be close to the Border in order to receive both Freeview and Saorview, plus two STBs

Youview boxes may pick up the Saorview signal(s) but some features
might not be compatible this is why I am suggesting you get a Saorview box

On to aerials now, you might need a directional aerial or a wideband aerial where you live depending on the terrain
and the closeness you are to the Transmitter,
it is best for you to get a professional aerial installer in to get a survey done
and to help you with getting the Saorview service

Have had the TalkTalk Huawei Youview recorder box for over 6 months now and have come to the conclusion that it is a very inferior product. The inability to store both Saorview muxes turns out not to be a signal issue but a quirk of the box itself (thanks to another poster for this info). In addition, considering the number of times the box has failed to record, or part recorded, and is now producing pixelated recordings, I consider it unfit for purpose.

I don't think it is fair to criticise the box for failing to pick up Saorview. It was never intended for that purpose. Pixelated recordings, however, are another matter. If your signal strength is good enough, they should record properly. The Huawei box, if working correctly, is a bit sluggish, but reliable and capable of excellent recordings. As it is only six months old, you should be eligible for a free replacement if it is faulty.

On the other hand, you could spend around £160 on a BT G4 box, which is made by Humax. Not only is this a much faster performer with a bigger hard drive and better remote, but it will update itself with all your TalkTalk facilities automatically.
