http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.ph...InLeatherPants

A form of Misaimed Fandom, when a fandom takes a controversial or downright villainous character and downplays his/her flaws, often turning him/her into an object of desire and/or a victim in the process. This can cause conflicts if the writers are not willing to retool the character to fit this demand.
In fanfiction, they are frequently the love object of the local Mary Sue, who uses the power of love to redeem the character. "I can fix him" is a commonly expressed sentiment among fans of Dracos in Leather Pants. In extreme cases, the affection these characters receive from fans can lead them to forget that they're actually still supposed to be villains. Or, on the flip side, even the worst crossings of the Moral Event Horizon can be rationalized, while any insult from the hero towards the villain is cast as deplorably mean. The writer's attempt to make the villain more "sympathetic" will likely causes them to remove everything that made the character so cool/well liked in the first place.
Common reasons for this include the character being wicked in a classy or cool way. A physically attractive villain is much more likely to be subject to this trope than a physically ugly one; Beauty Equals Goodness, after all, and shallow as it may be, it seems that, for some fans, this is the case even when the character's beauty only extends to their appearance. All Girls Want Bad Boys may be a factor with male villains getting a female fandom that views them through this lens.
Some villain archetypes, such as the Smug Snake (because of their off-puttingly arrogant personality), female villains (because it's mostly Fangirls who invoke this trope), and the Complete Monster (because of the severity of their evil deeds and absence of redeemability) are rarely susceptible to this, but it can still happen.
Jerkass Dissonance usually plays a part in this trope; it is much easier for people to forgive and overlook the negative qualities and stress the Freudian Excuses that form a sympathetic back-story for fictional characters than it is to do the same for people in real-life, because the actions of the fictional character have no real-world effect.
Expect also for fans to make excuses for the character not getting any comeuppance for their sins, and, for bonus points, gloat if one of their hated and/or villainized characters gets the short stick instead, especially if the latter is the victim of the former.
It seems that this is what Dean is becoming round here.

People can say what they want but there definitely wouldn't be the same reactions to him if he was ugly.

Another example - Michael Moon.

"Oh he's so misunderstood. Oh he's so layered and complex."

No, you fancy him.

To be fair people say the same thing about Ian Beale & he's no sex symbol.

To add to the confusion with Dean, to put his looks aside (if that's possible) is that he is not a classic black & white baddie. He's feeling guilty (but not for what he's done)but for his delusional belief that his "affair" will hurt Mick. He is friendly & pleasant to other members of the Carter family (Nancy, Stan, Tina). His relationship with Stacey seems genuine.
He appearsdelusional & unable (or unwilling) to recognise what he's done.
Add to this a back story which includes abondonment & abuse experienced by Dean & a v good looking & Charming actor who's playing the character & people will be less likely to interpret the character as an evil person.

I guess I wouldn't have any issues with Dean being a typical soap opera bad guy or with getting his comeuppance for Linda's rape (regardless of his looks) if not for his implied history as a surviving a rape himself. I'd like to know more about that, and how that turned kind of a naive kid into someone with such deep-seeded anger issues and delusions about sexual boundaries. Matt Di Angelo is pretty (and is doing a good job with this story so far in my opinion), but I'd want to see that story told even if the actor playing Dean wasn't conventionally attractive.

I think and hope Dean will get his comeuppance, but I rather hope it ends up in being sent to a mental health facility. If Dean's previous history as a victim of abuse isn't explored, the writers are throwing away a huge opportunity to tell a very interesting, complex, and probably very tragic story. To put it a different way, while I don't mind seeing Matt Di Angelo on my screen, I really am interested in Dean's story more than his looks.

I thought Michael was misunderstood, layered and complex but I still thought he was a terrible person.

It's the Edward Cullen effect. "Omg he's lyk so romantic. He's not creepy for watching her sleep. He just lyk loves her so much. He's only possessive and controlling because he doesn't want to lose her!!!1!!"

If 100 year old Edward Cullen actually looked like a 100 year old man, those girls wouldn't be defending his creepy arse.

At least Deans crime & flaws has been spelt out v clearly. E
Edward Cullens flaws were a lot less clear & led to young girlis not realising his frankly creepy personality

To be fair, anyone with a brain unclouded by hormones knows that a grown man sneaking into a 17 year old girl's bedroom to watch her sleep is creepy. It doesn't help that the book is written from Bella's pov and she obviously thinks it's romantic. I'm not sure what's more dangerous tbh, Stephenie Meyer's message that stalking is sweet or her obvious anti-abortion sentiment in Breaking Dawn.

She's the luckiest writer in the history of ever.

I agree. I actually haven't seen anyone on here saying anything akin to what the OP is saying is being said but maybe I'm reading the wrong threads.

There is a lot of discussion but everyone agrees that what Dean did was wrong and he needs punishment for it.

Edward is a role model for an abusive bf. Don't ever look for his qualities in a real life bf.
Read my link a few posts up.

He appeals to naive girlies who think lurrrve
trumps all. Reality will temper that.

Hooked? Not really. I read the books when the film was coming out. It was out of curiosity. I read the first fairly quickly since the writing is ridiculously easy to understand. SM writes like a 4 year old.

I like the first Twilight movie as a comedy film. It should not have been advertised as a romantic or supernatural movie. It's simply hilarious.

*Edward sparkles*

"You're beautiful"

The rest are pretty pointless. The humour quickly disappears and when watched as serious films, they're dire. My friend is a fan and I watched Breaking Dawn with her and fml it was boring and just plain awful. I don't know how she went from Harry Potter to that steaming turd.

Edward is abusive though and he shouldn't be defended. I think if an overweight middle aged man climbed into your daughter's bedroom to watch her sleep, you wouldn't think he was amazing.
