Is Danny Pink there because the writers think that girl viewers want to see lots of romance ? Looks like it to me. It's boring me witless. I hope something nasty, gets him - maybe a giant space doughnut full of jam.

Danny had more characterization after a few episodes than Rory ever had. Rory had one character trait: he was devoted to Amy Pond. And he was a nurse. That was it. That was literally all there was to Rory. Beyond that he was given the most idiotic exposition to say, so that neither the Doctor or Amy had to sound stupid: "That's an Apollo astronaut... coming out of the lake!" No f****** s***. Thanks for that contribution.

Pink has a mysterious, dramatic backstory, a clear inner conflict, complex relationships to the two lead characters (he doesn't simply adore Clara unconditionally like Rory did with Amy. He doesn't allow himself to become the dopey third wheel like Rory did but instead has his own viewpoints and methods) and actual motivation for what he does (or doesn't do).

Here's something that may surprise some people: you don't HAVE to like every character. You're not supposed to in fact. Alternatively, a character doesn't have to be signposted as someone you shouldn't like (ie a villain). His characterization has actually been quite subtle by Doctor Who standards. Compare to last week's episode (Flatline) with the 'loveable', big-hearted, 'you-will-like-him' graphiti artist and the curmudgeonly, irredeemable community service overseer, who, just in case we didn't get the message of 'hate this guy' the writer saw fit to give the Doctor dialogue to the effect of 'yeah, it's a shame that shitty, scum bag guy didn't die'. Now that is garbage characterization. That is plain shitty writing. They were embarrassing characters and it was embarrassing dialogue by the Doctor.

I actually like when the writer presents a character and shows me the respect of actually allowing myself to make up my mind about him. Pink has been presented slightly ambiguously, slanting towards the positive. We've had moments where we could choose to side with the Doctor, Clara or Danny. Or none of them or some combination thereof. That is actually good writing.

I like Danny Pink as a character in the show. I'm not sure I like him as a person. Because I don't fully trust him. Do you see the dichotomy there? My feelings towards the character contribute to the show's drama.

If people are seeing him as a bland, one-dimensional character then I can't help but think they're seeing only the depth they're capable of seeing (the standard Doctor Who 'he's a good guy. She's a bad guy' approach to characterization) because I see nothing of the sort. "He's supposed to be a good guy but I hate him!! This is terrible writing! We're supposed to think he's great but I don't!" Who said you're supposed to think that?

Are only characters you're 100% going to like allowed to be in the show? God, what a bland load of crap some people want to watch.

I'm interested to see how his storyline concludes (I hope it does conclude).

He'll probably be killed in the next episode.
Let's hope so.

I wasn't a fan of Rory but at least he acted sad, happy, angry , upset and had comedy lines too.

Danny is just boring. Why have Hon there for the whole series with almost no input.

My thoughts on Danny Pink is that the writers have misunderstood the female viewers that watch the show. They seem to think there needs to be a love interest for them to "ship" or they will stop watching the show. You can also see from some of the themes that was spoken about the older Doctor that they were worried about certain female viewers turning off without a young, good-looking male to look at. I think they were wrong too.

With Rory they showed, and also with Mickey, how a boyfriend can be successfully integrated into the show. They have tried to create unnecessary tension into the show.

I think both Clara and Danny will disappear at the end of the series.

Great post! There is huge ambiguity with Danny Pink hence all the negative posts. Viewers are 'supposed' to like him to but don't. Within a storyline, a plot.. there has to be a reason for that. It won't be bad acting, bad writing. It will be because there is much more to come.. I have faith and find likeable/not likeable issue intriguing.

oh please, much more to come, well why dont we just have 10 really basic bland no budget episodes and just look forward to the finale then,

NO there needs to be a development or a connection to the audience or a likeable character. he is NONE of these and it really puzzles me why.

He is a rather one dimensional spare part at present. Maybe he is a UNIT soldier who is undercover to protect or monitor the Doctor from evil Clara. Maybe the person he sheds tears over killing in the first episode is Clara in some timey wimey way. He'd better have a better back story than just the annoying controlling boyfriend or else he ends up as being rather pointless

It's the fact he's a bit dull and controlling he doesn't ask Clara to do things he orders her to and it seems it's his way or no way notice how no matter what they are talking about or doing she has to end up doing it the way he said.
If he's so 'controlling' he's doing a lousy job, Clara proved again last night she does what she wants when she wants, and with whoever she wants, carries on lying to Danny even when it's stupid and blatantly untrue, like with the phone call, I'm surprised he's still around.. The one thing he can't do is 'control' her!

But why should she have to lie to him if she says she is going off with her freind she should be able to say that.

He wants to control her maybe a better term he does seem annoyed when he finds she has disobeyed orders

For me, probably the worst, most flat uncharacterized character there has ever been. There have been characters on screen for 10 mins of a single episode who have shown more personality and acting
Oh come on. He does have some range. He can do very mildly fond of Clara to very mildly annoyed with her or the Doctor, to very mildly perturbed by some menace. There's a lot to be said for understatement...

He could be one of the creatures from last week, as an undercover agent plotting takeover of the 3-D world!

He was perhaps a big viewer of TV Burp around 2004/05. Remember Harry Hill doing that?

That explanation will do me. An inanely cynical attempt to maintain female viewers.

The Pink/Clara romance simply doesn't work for me. There's no chemistry between them. I blame the script writers for this. The Pink character hasn't had much to do, and when we do see them together, he seems to be trying to control her. Me or the Doctor etc. As other's have pointed out, Pink isn't likeable.

I think his apparent lack of emotion may be to do with his time in whatever military organisation he was serving in. He's been an interesting presence during the series and once again represents that dilemma companions face about the risks and excitement of travelling with the Doctor over a nice quiet home life. I found it unusual how he didn't want Clara travelling with the Doctor, but at the end of Kill The Moon when Clara said she was done with it he almost seemed to be trying to subtly encourage her to continue. Also he didn't seem at all angry when he "discovered" that she'd been lying to him about still travelling with the Doctor, but I don't think it was due to the actor's inability to properly emote. His interactions with the Doctor have been interesting as well. Also, if Clara is so willing to lie to Danny Pink who she apparently loves, how willing is she to lie to the Doctor?

Earlier I thought the first episode with the solider called Blue who the doctor said no to taking and Danny's tears and odd somersault jumping and his time travelling relation - were all adding up to Danny not being what he seemed.

Based on the series so far I'm more inclined to think bad writing (With a wierd fixation on colours for surnames being a coincidence) and the female viewer ploy idea.

Also what does grate is clara suspected that Danny had seen the homework on the tardis and yet she still continued to lie to him over and over. A normal conversation about that she tried to quit but couldn't and what it means to her might show more respect for the person she claims to love....

His "jealousy" of the Doctor's relationship with Clara comes across as more of a petulant child not getting what he wants than anything.

Maybe in the finale we will see happy. Sad , angry, annoyed , joyful expressions from him. That is the new big arc?

Thing is Noel Clark aka Mickey had it with rose but he sort of accepted it as did rose and the doctor. But there was a closer looking age gap with ecclestone and piper. With Coleman and capaldi the jealously is purely taking her away. But as mentioned by her before. It shouldn't matter as the doctor brings her back the instant where they left.

...wow. Such hatred for a character we see so little of.

"this Danny Pink crap"

Wow. Just wow.

Who went and made YOU a Hugo winning script writer? Cos that's one heck of a well balanced, thought out and eloquently stated opinion that I have no chance in hell of even beginning to respond to it.

People seem determined to hate him. Why?? Is it because he isn't a pair of boobs on legs? Is it because he makes Clara less "available"? Is it because he has no wish to travel on the TARDIS? Or is it because he's not Rose fricking flying Tyler?

Seriously though the continued and unconditional hatred for Pink is staggering. I wasn't too sure about him myself at first, but tonight's episode changed that for me. He came across as genuinely caring for the kids and clara, though he took no nonsense and demanded of people only what he would give them. The idea that Pink has seen enough danger that he has learned to appreciate the normal, mundane stuff that even the Doctor has said before he loves about humans, is something I find refreshing and new.

And did anyone notice the Doctor actually used his name in the end? I am liking the character arcs this series.

And please stop spouting this "crappy soap opera" rubbish as if it's new. Fans with an axe to grind have been using that one since the 1980s.
is there really any need for such snobbery ?!
Seriously people are entitled to their opinions , I have never moaned about any other love interest in the show, I liked Mickey and Rory. Danny Pink is just NO

lol I actually quite liked the Doctors line in the episode, it was true, and in keeping with the presents Doctors persona. i suppose it was shocking to hear him say it but its Capaldi 's doctor for you.

i think though Danny pink has a point, if your gf was randomly running off with a bloke in a Tardis, it would be a pretty sore point. the problem with the Pink thing is that unfortunately the two actors have zero chemistry between them. I think the other big issue is that Capaldi and Clara have really good chemistry between them which is probably making the storyline ineffective. Im not sure whether its intentional or not but I'm getting the Doctor jealously over Danny being more believable than her and Danny being an 'item'. Which considering the whole, this Doctor not flirting emphasis of Deep Breathe, is making a interesting subplot.

The problem I have with him and the Clara Pink story is that they seem to have serious bouts of amnesia because they literally have the same argument every week for about 5 weeks running and I don't see the point. I'm really confused as to why he is still constantly getting in such a flap about her going off doing stuff with the Doctor.
^This. It's getting repetitive and boring. I don't want it done the "American Way". A whole range of relationship problems solved in one episode, standing on the doorstep, but this is getting ridiculous.
