Need a Gaming TV
Area88

Bought an Xbox One but need a new tv to play it. I would like please the best one I can get in terms of value for money, price against quality.

It has to be 60hz (a lot of my games are 60hz only) and have a low response time so there is no lag between pressing buttons on the controller and seeing it on the screen.

I was looking at the Sony W7 but I heard it's 50hz only. Is that true? Please can someone help me. It's so hard to get these two criteria's of 60hz and low response time met.

All new HD TV's should synch at 50 and 60Hz and most also at 24Hz. My Sony KDL-40 synchs at 60Hz for all VESA standard resolutions. It will work with 1080p at 24, 25, 29.97 (30) 50 and 2 x 29.97 (60) frames/second. I guess the W7 will be the same.

I will see if I can find a manual.

Can't find a spec but TV does have a VGA socket so it must do 60Hz

Nigel will be able to confirm this for you, but a quick search does indicate that this is a 50/60hz capable TV.

Thanks for the lightning quick answers, I appreciate it very much. Is it just PAL 60 or will it playback NTSC? I have a big imported anime DVD collection.

Lastly, is an extended warranty a good or an unnecessary idea?

Now thinking a 27 inch monitor would be a good idea. Will it be to small if I am 2 metres away?

As others have said - it's both 50Hz and 60Hz compatible - and NTSC/PAL makes no difference, as you shouldn't ever be watching it via composite video

Either watch it via RGB SCART (no NTSC or PAL) or via HDMI (again, no NTSC or PAL) if you have an HDMI DVD player.

But it will almost certainly play NTSC anyway, assuming you used an NTSC composite source.

If you buy from a Sony dealer it comes with a full 5 year Sony warranty.

i have an asus 27'' monitor which i am very happy with, i mostly do my gaming on pc but i also have a ps3 hooked up to it, zero input lag that i can notice. having said that, there is a 32'' tv in our living room, it does make a difference playing on a larger screen for console gaming, but my room mates are always using it so i can never get at it haha. the 32'' is a very cheap model from lg, only cost around about £260 as we are all too skint at the moment for anything fancy, i'll try to find the model number. it is excellent for gaming, no input lag and good picture. i have found with tv's that the more expensive ones with lots of fancy picture processing features have more input lag as a result, the cheaper simpler models have less input lag.

On Samsung TVs if you change the HDMI input label to "PC" it strips away all of the enhancements and gives you reduced input lag. Many models also have a dedicated Game Mode which will do much the same thing.

I am aware of the game mode option, i had not heard of the PC input trick before tho. When I was helping my cousin buy a high end tv i did some research in that area to find a low input lag tv for him. Even with game mode enabled a lot of the more expensive tv's have high input lag, making them not ideal for gaming. it is not as much of a problem with cheaper tv's tho, i don't know how effective the PC input trick is so i can't comment on that. I would recommend that the OP goes to avforums.com, it is a great place to get advice on buying a tv along with other av equipment, they really know there stuff over there and its always busy so you don't have to wait ages for a reply. If he uses the search function he may find what he's looking for without having to wait...
