There a few odd things about Danny.

Over the past few weeks he has seen aliens a time machine and other stuff and has barely raised a eye brow.

The jump he did in The Caretaker was to good to be human he must have jumped at least 15 feet into the air.

We know he was a solider but we don't know where he could be he was assigned to UNIT so all of this stuff isn't really new to him and he was already aware of The Doctor maybe he got hurt and was upgraded and people who have had cybernetic upgrades or parts have played a part this year Half face man -The Sheriff (until that bit was cut) --Psi.

Maybe there is more coming

But the trouble is, he's been so boring up to now does anyone care what his story is?

Nothing about this character grabs me, and as others have said, the forced "romance" between him and Clara is just silly.

My (probably worthless) speculation (in spoiler tags just in case)
Spoiler
Danny is still a solider, he's attached to UNIT who have information that the Doctor is endangered by Clara. His job is to keep an eye on her while they're on Earth, his "cover" is to be a maths teacher at Coal Hill

Not bothering with tags...

If you're right, let's hope he doesn't get her preggers or the organisation you name might have to pay half a million in compensation!!

Oops, Kudos to hopscotch23 who came up the same idea in this thread

Indeed, It has interesting parallels with real life, at least here in the UK - this for example

He's a normal soldier who wanted to help improve people's lives by joining the army but ended up in a war and possibly killing someone he didn't want to.

He said in last nights episode he wasn't bothered about seeing the solar flare; he has been 'damaged' by his experiences and after witnessing war many things lose their ability to amaze if you have lost something of yourself.

How do you explain the jump that a Olympic Gold Medalist in acrobatics couldn't pull off

a) the robot wasn't that tall,
b) the camera was low
c) a little bit of poetic licence or if you want a proper explanation.

Just out of sight of Danny's side of the Robot were some old paint cans against the grill to the side of the robot, Danny made his run up and stepped up the cans using them as a rudimentary ramp to give him some more height to his jump.

The robot was shown to be at least as tall as the actors and his jump was about twice it's hight as it had to fire high into the air to shoot him

I'm willing to accept he jumped off something it would be the only logical explanation in human terms.

I think Clara has a mission (unknown to herself) to harm the Doctor. She has been either brainwashed or programmed by Missy to this end.

I think Danny is more than human (the jump suggests this) but yes - he has been sent by UNIT to defeat the threat posed by Clara and Missy.

And (ducks for cover) I am getting a horrible sinking feeling that Missy WILL be the Rani. Presumably she wasn't on Gallifrey when it was 'hidden' so is also out there somewhere.

Danny Pink mentioned about pocket supernovas, they don't teach that in maths.

It is proven week after week that the physics within Doctor Who do not correlate with the physics of real life.

A person somersaulting quite high strikes me as more believable than a forest without roots that cannot be burnt, that grows overnight on account of magical future-predicting sprites and then evaporates without physical trace.

Wow, so you do not think a maths teacher might have other interests?

They don't teach visual basic programming in Chemical Engineering (wot I am) but I can do it because I taught myself because I am interested in it.

People have hobbies.

But they were explained in the show you may not like the explanation but they were explained.

Hobbies are good

Come on, admit that it was a strange thing to say regarding a torch, if he had said sun shining in your eyes, would have made more sense.

He reads and watches sci-fi in his spare time? Or he's picked up the terminology from Clara or the kids?

I don't think for a second that Danny is an undercover UNIT operative.
I would not at all be surprised to find out that he was a UNIT soldier, rather than a regular Army soldier, and that whatever event caused him to walk out was an alien incursion.
I would also not at all be surprised to find out that UNIT have been keeping tabs on him since he left, and may even have deliberately got him unknowingly transferred to Coal Hill to be near Clara.

This is basically what I had come on the thread to say.

More to Danny? there could hardly be any less really.

While I don't really think this is the case I just had a idea.

They have already mentioned how you can get addicted to this lifestyle and Clara may be.

What if Danny has got a past and the reason he doesn't even want to try the TARDIS is he was addicted to it and knows if he starts doing stuff like that again he won't be able to stop.

See, I just don't get this ^^ (no offence)

Because it's obvious to me Danny Pink is being 'kept under wraps' and therefore is deliberately being portrayed as 'dull as dishwater' in that sense. So I find it quite interesting how he is being characterised and how this will develop...

I can see your trying to be optimistic, but for me, there are two points on that line of thinking. Firstly, it's not guaranteed that there will indeed be some amazing reveal that will suddenly make him interesting, and secondly, I personally don't think there is anything quite interesting enough that they could reveal that would justify just how much of a bore he has been in the series so far .

Yes, I agree I am being optimistic and as a result could end up quite disappointed.

I can't understand though - Moffat introducing yet another 'lame male boyfriend'. It's been done. So surely, there is more of a plan with Danny Pink? Surely it's about time we had a strong male companion (or whoever he is) to feature in the series? I really really can't accept that they are simply rewriting the boyfriend/girlfriend boring relationship thing? And I liked Rory in the end. He developed into a stronger and funny character.

But, I repeat (ha ha) Danny Pink HAS to be more than just Clara's boyfriend!

I'm convincing myself slowly..
