have concerns about getting a second line.
To cut a long story short I am moving in with a relative who already has phone and broadband services with Talktalk. I also happen to get free phone and fibre broadband courtesy of my employer. The relative needs to keep the existing line in her name along with her phone number. I can't help but worry that Openreach may just install my new line over the top of the existing line thus losing the existing number in the process. Is there a risk of that actually happening?

Rik. I would make sure that you get written confirmation that your service provider is installing an additional line so that you have some comeback if it does go pear shaped. Also if Openreach are installing a second line they will have to attend the property to install a second master socket. So you will have an opportunity to confirm with the Openreach guy that he has been instructed to install a second line not take over the existing line. So if no mention is made of an Openreach visit that should start alarm bells ringing. |

Hopefully you won't get a jobsworth Openreach guy (met a few of them in my time!) and the one who turns up will tell you exactly what he plans to do and listen to what you have to say as well. Supplies of tea/coffee and biccies often help lubricate the process I find.

Well today's the day. Thankfully it was a BT Openreach engineer(one of the ex army guys they took on a couple of years ago, nice guy). Anyway, he installed the second line with no issues and also fixed some dodgy wiring on the first line. Someone had wired extension cables in to the test socket.
All's good and I am now getting a nice 74 meg. |
