I think the one thing we can be sure of is that the Doctor *will* have a companion in season 9. It's part of the show's DNA, and we've seen before what can happen when the Doctor is left to his own devices (The Waters of Mars and Listen, for starters).

If there was no permanent companion, we would inevitably end up with a series of Companions of the Week in the mould of Astrid and Lady Christina Whatsername, which is fun every now and then but would wear pretty thin pretty quickly.
