Cupcakes: Anybody got any ideas what went wrong?

Just out of curiosity, really.....

Bought some caramel cupcakes at a local fayre-thing yesterday.
They looked lovely, the icing on the top was delicious, the sponge was light and fluffy but, lordy, the filling was absolutely disgusting!

They had some kind of allegedly caramel-flavoured buttercream filling but it tasted more like marmite. If anything, it was more salty than marmite.

Is it possible that somebody screwed up and added a heap of salt to the recipe for the filling, rather than sugar, or is there something else that could've caused this disaster?

I just thought I'd ask so I can sound educated when the subject (inevitably) comes up for discussion.

Check the description.
Does it read "caramel crapcakes"?

Salted Caramel seems to be one of the latest "things" - find it horrid myself; https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=sa...AfDH8ge-_oHgAw

Well, that's just plain wrong!

If that's what it was, and that's what it's supposed to taste like, I'd advise anybody who doesn't like the idea of a marmite cupcake to avoid it like the plague.

And I say this as a big fan of marmite.
