iPhone Problem - Please Help
Last night my iPhone 5s fell into a bucket of water. I still have my old iPhone 4 so I'm back using that now. Went to the local phone shop today & they said my iPhone 5s can't be repaired so they gave me a new SIM card to put into the old phone & now it's working fine.
The problem is, my text conversations, phone history (missed, received & outgoing calls) plus my WhatsApp conversations are all gone - for the last year (I upgraded to the 5s last November). Also my photos. So when I go into my texts, all the messages that are there are from November 2013 & before. A whole year is missing. When I upgraded from the 4 to the 5s, everything transferred across to the new phone - all the texts, photos etc. Everything. So, why can it not happen if you have to downgrade? Where did I go wrong & how do I prevent this from happening in the future? |

It works fine when "it just works" but when it doesn't just work it can get very messy as Apple don't really explain what's going on behind the scenes. |

How were you backing up the 5S - computer or iCloud ? Not that it's very helpful but IMO the whole business of what get stored where in the Apple ecosystem and how you get it back in situations like this is a bit of a nightmare and something of a black art.
It works fine when "it just works" but when it doesn't just work it can get very messy as Apple don't really explain what's going on behind the scenes. It's something to think about though - I'll have to make sure I back up regularly. |

AFAIK iPhones automatically back up when connected to a charger and not touched for at least a couple of hours - so if you leave your phone on and on charge overnight it should back up automatically then. I usually turn my 5S off at night, but once a week leave it on whilst charging at night so it backs up.

Yeah leave auto backup on and you won't have that problem in future. Basically if you get a new phone all you do is enter your iTunes/icloud password on the setup screen and tell it to restore from icloud and then it will put everything back on identical to your old phone.
With your damaged 5S you should put it in a bowl of rice and by a heater for 2/3 days before turning it on, if you've tried turning it on already whilst wet then it's too late. |

It's not quite as simple as that. Unless you have a paid iCloud account you are capped at 5GB, so typically if you are anything like me you cannot store all your photos (other than photstream ones) in your backup. I have now paid for a 200Gb account so I don't have to think about it too much. You have to be very aware of what goes into a backup, but that's where it gets hazy as far as Apple is concerned. e.g. photos go to the cloud (if there's room) but videos don't. I recently lost some videos by not realising that.

Well 5gb is JUST about enough for me because I don't store 1000's of pictures/videos on my phone. And whenever I've restored from icloud it restored my videos too, so not sure what you mean about that.
