Yes, and look what happened to them. The Doctor has become painfully aware of how whisking people away and putting them in constant danger screws them up forever. Clara, in contrast to Rose, Donna or Amy, didn't want to leave her life behind, but still dreamed of travelling. Why should it make a difference to the Doctor? Instead of him coming running when she calls, there's nothing to stop him dropping her off, skipping ahead to next Thursday and picking her up again.

“That's the kind of scenario that rings true for me, and when take away the sci fi element you can see that there are plenty of people in the real world who actually do that kind of thing in the form of long term world traveling.”
That's what you might think you want, but if your travelling around the globe involved you seeing impossible things and being in mortal danger all the time, you might appreciate being able to have a fulfilling job and a comfy couch at the same time,

“Not to dismiss or insult anyone's opinion but I think the people who prefer permanent TARDIS travelers are the kind of people who would want to fully embrace the adventure themselves and the kind who think the Clara type set up is best are the kind of people for whom everyday ordinary routine driven normal life is enough, to which there is nothing wrong with that, but I prefer permanent travelers because I'm definitely in the first 'embrace the adventure' category.”
To be adventurous, you have actually go on an adventure - getting it all on a plate is boring. Surely better to have something to look forward to at the weekend?
