oh
I've not used it ages but it was always nice to know it was there.
Pity they aren't going to supply their own Usenet service like Virgin do.

news.btinternet.com

It's actually not that bad from what I remember, at least if you only needed recent posts. I'm with Astraweb now but prior to that a few years back I used to use the free service provided by BT.

- Mirror of Giganews
- ~30 day retention
- Max 3 connections per BT IP
- Speed is capped - back then I was on 2mbit ADSL and it could max that but apparently that was about the limit.

And yes they do (did?) have all the binaries.

I wouldn't be surprised if that's why they're closing it for, because people with FTTC or fast ADSL2+ see it as way too slow.

On the other hand, Giganews, which they are now pushing us towards, have:

2,279 days binary retention
3,102 days text retention
50 connections and optional encryption
Effectively unlimited d/l speeds (78Mbps? No problem).

At a cost of course. And their top package also has addons:

VPN proxy servers covering most Countries
30 GB online storage
Usenet browser with full search.

EasyNews ain't too shabby, either.

Probably predictably, it is now the 4th of December and the BT News Server is still function fine. Perhaps no one knows where the off switch is?

If it's anything like some customer sites I've been to, perhaps there's no-one left who knows where the server is, never mind the switch

Yes, been off since first thing this morning, end of the year is a much more logical date for the turn off.

You don't need to pay anything, just use something like Thunderbird. Instead of creating an email account you create a Newsgroup account.

I have not used newsgrups in a good number of years now and had though they had come to an end a while back as you hardly ever hear about them now.

Last time I heard about news services it was the company it geek spouting off about how he downloads lots of films from it.

I assume then he was using a dodgy one and bt was a newsgroup discussion?
