I do especially when the writing gets ridiculous.

EastEnders is really the only soap I still have loyalty too but 2014 has been absysmal for me. I sometimes feel like just giving up on it for good as clearly its best days are behind it.

All the soaps are well past there peaks. There's still the odd good story here and there and some really good random episodes but none of the can sustain the quality they way they once did. Overall 2014 has been an appalling year.

Completely agree! I will probably stay loyal to it, but it's nothing like it used to be (EE), really don't stand the dtc and digital spy hype...

Sure, it's improved but there's so much cringe stuff, and so many waste of a space characters! So many good characters have left, and have had some pretty shit replacements! The storylines are quite good, but the show lacks drama, and when we do get some dramatic episodes, there's loads of deadwood involved!

We get a few good episodes, followed by a load of bad ones, the shows up and down like a yoyo IMO, I don't really know what to think... When I compare the show to how it was 1985-2010, it's nothing like it used to be there's just some really poor scripts and so much going on that makes me yawn, and doesn't get me hanging off the edge of my seat, like I used to be! The show lacks tension, and strong dynamics between the cast!

There's some bad continuity too, so much going on, that we barely see Patrick or anything, and there's not really any everyday normal scenes to add a bit of normality to the show! There's also too many Carter's! Sorry EastEnders, but you're backwards and forwards like crazy! I miss my favourite show!

*rant over*

I very much doubt that.

Also given your age, I very much doubt you remember the first 10 or so years of the show.

It beats 2013, and most of 2012 but yep, absolutely nothing like it used to be! The show used to be unmissable and mean something, we'd get so many good episodes; they'd be dangerous villains, loads of night shoots and a great cast, it's all been replaced by shit characters, weak acting between a lot of them, poor scripts, and boring episodes!

When I look at Emmerdale, I see a show with a great cast, some amazing storylines, great scripts, and some unmissable stuff, that actually gets me excited, they also have a lesbian couple who are capable of acting! Compare that to EastEnders and DTC who thinks he's the 'saviour' of EastEnders:/ and well...

Ok, rant not over...

you will find with most continuing drama's, their best years have gone. corrie's best imo was from 1960-1964, eastenders was from 1985-1989. the julia smith era was the best. brookside 1982-1988. do you see the pattern emerging. the only exception is probably emmerdale, which is so much better now, than when it was a farm.

Sometimes I think people take soaps way too seriously on here. Soaps are meant to be something people watch for entertainment. Obsessing over producers, SL's and 'deadwood' can't be no good. I mean talking about soaps can be fun but really getting angry and frustrated over a TV show because people think the writing, SL's and producer isn't good to the point they want to boycott the show isn't very healthy for people. But that's just my opinion.

Will never give up my soaps, Specially EastEnders, now that its getting good again,

I brought my 52" tele for a reason, I'm not going to not watch anything on it haha.

We should keep the tv alive, otherwise our living room and bedroom will look blank and shite without one.

Yes and no. None of the soaps are utterly fantastic nowadays and there are weeks of utter garbage where I just ask myself why I watch this cr*p... but then, to be honest of an evening after a long day on the grindstone sometimes I do just want something that can at worst pass by half hour and at best actually entertain (occasionally even grip me) without it being world-class, clever storytelling worthy of widespread critical acclaim.

Having said that- tonight's C4 episode of Hollyoaks.... now THAT is something that makes you wanna give up on a soap!

I did stop watching soaps once a few years ago. And then I realised how sh*t UK TV really is as I spent a whole 30 minutes just flicking through channels . It's true the quality of the writing isn't as good as they once were, but what else is there to watch? Soaps are the only decent TV we get on a every day basis.

Happened to me 2 months ago with Hollyoaks when Dodger was revealed as Nico's father. Whether that is true or not that was the final straw for me. Hollyoaks is just ridiculous now - everything for shock value to the point where its no longer a shock, characters getting killed off for no reason or long term characters leaving and random new people coming in to replace them as their clone (Clare/Grace, Mercedes/Porsche, to name a few examples - in a few years we'll probably have Ferrari McQueen as a new random unheard of cousin to clone Porsche for when she gets killed off in the annual cast cull or whatever in a couple years), and more than anything atrocious writing which has dragged down any good characters/actors/storylines remaining with it. No character development at all, just overkilling characters and trying to bring back the shocks that really did shock viewers. Not to mention changing the whole soap from what it was meant to be - about students. If I want to watch a medical drama then I'll watch Holby City/Casualty/Doctors. Hollyoaks Later getting axed was a big blow as well - I'd even go as far as to say axe Hollyoaks and keep the later episodes - or make Hollyoaks a late night drama. But tbh the ridiculousness of the show for the past year or so has possibly made it too irredeemable for Hollyoaks Later by this stage - maybe next year if they get new writers who actually care about the show. The irony is the show has tried to be so unpredictable because its got its unpredictability right a couple times a few years back but in reality its very predictable - and makes it boring and very difficult to attach to any character now.

Anyway thats my rant on Hollyoaks. Yeah I've slated it a little but I've justified why I think this as well.

Also happened to me with the baby swap storyline in EastEnders - stopped watching EastEnders then after 11 years of consistently watching - started watching again regularly when the Carters came in at Christmas. Mainly watch for Johnny as I love him to pieces but other gripping story lines such as the return of Sharon Watts and Nick Cotton's return have kept me interested also.

Don't watch Emmerdale very much and rarely if ever watch Corrie so can't really comment on those.

I've only ever stayed loyal to EE, but that's because it's the first soap I started watching from a young age and it's stuck, Corrie, ED & Hollyoaks I can dip in and out of atm, ED I've been watching regular as it's improved a lot,

Corrie & HO are in terrible states.

Soaps will always go through patches of being shit and being good, others will stay like it for a long time, swings and rounds about but it's still the one thing you can watch daily and is continuous, you invest in the characters and the storylines it escapism at it's best.

I agree Corrie and HO are in awful states! EastEnders isn't in great health either though tbf, it ent what it used to be, as it's a shame, because it could be, I think we need an EP like John Yorke or Santer to give the show stronger dynamics! I like a lot of DTC's work but it doesn't quite cover what EastEnders should be! I agree though, I have also stayed loyal to EE as I fell in love with it back in 2007, when the Santer era started and when I first started watching (possibly one of the greatest era's for the soap!), but I was SO close to giving up in 2013! I don't think I'd fall in love with the show now though, it's not very appealing!

That's the problem with a lot of soaps these days though, they just aren't as appealing as what they used to be, and so younger children/teenagers aren't getting into them as much! And no teenagers and younger children are not bothered about 16-25 yr characters, and their dilemma's! They want mature and gritty drama just like the older people watching the show!
