It's amazing to me how overrated this girl is, not much singing talent, mediocre pop songs all on the same subject, yet she constantly outsells the competition by more than double.

I've slowly become a fan of Taylor over the years since her Speak Now album and believe me, it's not hard to see why this girl does so well.

First off her songwriting IS incredible, whether people want to believe it or not. She has a way of writing songs that almost sounds like she's directly telling you the story in person. And heartbreak/love is a universal thing. It's not hard to see why those types of songs sell.

Secondly, she knows how to write a catchy song. But mostly she's built up a hardcore fan base because this girl goes above and beyond what I've seen ANY other artist do in the last 10 years for their fans. She holds secret parties for them which she selected the fans herself, has them in her music videos, randomly gives them advice on Instagram and tumblr when they ask her for it Etc. It's actually incredible the amount of work she puts in with her fans and promoting her albums.

She has had a lot of success and could have probably sat back and done nothing and this album would have sold bucket loads but yet never feels entitled to success, she puts in the hardworking. Other pop stars could learn a few things from her.

Her songwriting isn't incredible at all. Not anymore

Uh oh!
I don't know about you
But I'm feeling 22
Everything will be alright
If you keep me next to you
You don't know about me
But I'll bet you want to
Everything will be alright
If we just keep dancing like we're
22, ooh-ooh
22, ooh-ooh

Or

We are never ever ever getting back together,
We are never ever ever getting back together,
You go talk to your friends, talk to my friends, talk to me
But we are never ever ever ever getting back together

Or

'Cause the players gonna play, play, play, play, play
And the haters gonna hate, hate, hate, hate, hate
Baby, I'm just gonna shake, shake, shake, shake, shake
I shake it off, I shake it off
Heart-breakers gonna break, break, break, break, break
And the fakers gonna fake, fake, fake, fake, fake
Baby, I'm just gonna shake, shake, shake, shake, shake
I shake it off, I shake it off

and many more.

That's is not incredible songwriting at all. Hardly a lyrical genius.

Carole King (one of the greatest female songwriters of all time) is what you call an incredible songwriter. Not taylor swift. She can sing though, that's all i will praise her for.

I used to like her when she was country. Then she was interesting. Since she sold herself short and went down the cheesey pop route I haven't liked her music as much.

Not to far from your hero Lady Gaga. She doesn't even make sense half the time either. I'm on the right track baby i was born this way, Jesus loves me!

My exact thoughts. I'm not praising Taylor Swift as a lyricist, but it's rather hypocritical to slam her writing abilities if you "stan" for an artist who is arguably worse.

That's what I was thinking.

Hey there sugar baby
Saw you twice at the pop show
You taste just like glitter mixed with rock and roll
I like you a lot lot
Think you're really hot hot

I know you think you're special
When we dance real crazy
Glam-aphonic, electronic, disco baby
I like you a lot lot
All we want is hot hot

[Chorus:]
Boys boys boys
We like boys in cars
Boys boys boys
Buy us drinks in bars
Boys boys boys
With hairspray and denim
Boys boys boys
We love them!

Oh, oh

Baby is a bad boy
With some retro sneakers
Let's go see The Killers
And make out in the bleachers
I like you a lot lot
Think you're really hot hot
Let's go to the party
Heard our buddy's the DJ
Don't forget my lipstick
I left it in your ashtray
I like you a lot lot
All we want is hot hot

I'm not loose, I like to party
Let's get lost in your Ferrari
Not psychotic or dramatic
I like boys and that is that
Love it when you call me legs
In the morning buy me eggs
Watch your heart when we're together
Boys like you love me forever

Oh, oh, oh, oh

We love them!

I bet Joni Mitchell and Bob Dylan are quaking in their boots.

As for Taylor Swift, her lyrics have always read like diary entries of a 12 year old girl. And even when she was classed as a country singer she was always county-light.

She's a great little pop star, and sometimes that's all you need to be.

She's isn't my hero. Love to know where you plucked that load of crap from. Oh i forgot, my username. The same silly insults and digs i have had directed at me since i joined. Change the record. Your as uncreative and dull as Taylor's music. Like i have said a billion times, i hate my username and if i could change it, i would of a long time ago.

and I have never heard people label Gaga as an amazing songwriter anyway. But for people to be labelling Taylor swift to be one, that's laughable

Woah guys, a little immature to compare like that? Little-Monster never once said Gaga was a lyrical genius? Chill out with the attack. Let's not turn the thread into a Taylor Vs Gaga debate.

I do disagree with Little-Monster though. The songs highlighted weren't meant to be lyrical masterpieces, they were meant to be hit singles. A lot of her album tracks are better examples of her knack for lyricism.

Wow. That's a lot of sheep. Perhaps even more than New Zealand.

It's not really buying an album is it. Just invisible computer files. Not like going to the shops and buying a CD or LP.

Oh come on, I realise it's just out but how many times have you seen albums go for 99p? It's hardly buying an album is it. An invisible music collection but I have to give people that buy invisible digital music come credit. They are willing to money for what most get free on a Google search. It's not buying an album though.

Albums are physical. And 1989 will be released on LP in December.

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree on the lyric subject, I hear nothing impressive in any of her songs, at least the ones I've heard, just the same dear diary lyrics recycled over and over.

I wanted to change my username too, LM. My one is too close to my real name, I'd like to remain a little more anonymous in case my family or employers checked out DS. Unfortunately the moderators won't allow it.

Apparently this album went gold in one day in Japan!

Gold = 100K copies

It has sold so far 60K in the UK midweeks.
