FKA twigs v. Jhene Aiko v. Tinashe v. Solange
Which of the artists do you prefer stylistically and in general?
I would have to say FKA is the most original/unique, whilst Tinashe is the best performer/vocalist. Jhene I find to be a bit one dimensional. And Solange I just adore. All are making waves as the forefront of R&B's latest trend (alternative r&b), and all have become famous due to crdible reasons (eps, mixtapes etc) and have released their debut album this year. Did the over/underwhelm? Which was your favourite? This thread is less of pitting against, and more of a discussion of where three stylistically different but are grouped together as the main artists or alternative r&b/pbr&b. Your thoughts?

Tinashe's album was ruined for me by three rap collabs in a row that just didn't need to happen, though the songs would have been fine otherwise. Don't particularly agree with your comment about Jhene's dimensions. |

Only heard of Solange and Tinashe.
Solange's True EP and Sol-Angels album make her better than even her sister IMO so I'll go for her. |

I think you need to check a fact or two.

Those are your opinions however, a lot of people like twigs, and some people like the rap collabs. Look however at the rest of the teacks on Aquarius.

Not bothered by any of them other than FKA twigs, I really like her music it's very different and full of depth, I've also met her in person quite a few times now and she is certainly not as pretentious as some may think, a pleasureable person to know she's also a very intelligent young lady who is very much into her craft and is definately all about her work as a musician. If only there were more artists around with her ethic.
But in all honesty, I can understand why her music isn't for everyone, it's somthing you have to give a bit of time too and at the same time very marmite. |

The Tinashe point is an opinion. Twigs is actually rubbish.

Thats why she was favourite to win the mercury prize, is MOBO nominated and has one of the most critically acclaimed albums of the year thus far. Its also ALREADY been included on the Pitchfork list of the best albums this decade despite such a recent release.

Had a listen to some Twigs and Jhené. Think I'd have to be really in a particular mood to listen to Twigs and Jhené just does nothing for me....I'd say she is the weakest out of the four.

Overall I would say Jhene as she has produced the most music of this new genre, I love both mix tapes but was slightly disappointed by her album, it was all very samey for me, I think her voice works better on harder more edgy tracks like Comfort Inn Ending which is the best thing she's put out so far.
I would put Solange next, True is sublime and I also loved her last full album even though it's a different style, T.O.N.Y. is outstanding. She needs to release an album soon however and she could probably go ahead of Jhene as I think she is more talented. To be honest I haven't heard much of Tinashe, I haven't had the time to listen to her album yet but I will! In saying that 2 On my favourite song of the year so far, I didn't like Pretend however it has started to grow on me. I havent listened to any of FKA Twigs, tbh I think the pretentious image the media has made of her puts me off her slightly. |

Someone you haven't mentioned is Dawn Richard, a brilliant RnB artist from New Orleans, she does the alt-RnB thing and she's incredible, image wise, sound wise, vocally.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hjXt8vksmdw I'd suggest previewing her songs on itunes because her albums are so conceptual, mixing themes of romance with sci-fi and medieval themes, such beautiful music. |

Dawn is EVERYTHING when she is in Danity Kane, from the MTB days until now. However for some reason she just isn't as good solo, idk what it is but she is so much better in DK, and it can't be her writing as she wrote the majority of the DK material from Welcome to the Dollhouse onwards, it's such a shame DK3 never worked out they would have been unstoppable!

TInashe's the most famous by far, thanks to 2 On. I heard it in the club only a couple of hours ago and it always gets a great reception when it gets played.
I like Jhene Aiko too, she's got some good tunes. I never heard any of FKA Twigs's songs beore though. |

I like Tinashe's album and FKA twigs impressed me right from her first EP. Jhene Aiko to me is just monotonous and doesn't even have that good a voice.

Tinashe and Jhene for me Solange is very talented but I don't really like her material she releases and I'm not really familiar with FKA Twiggs.

I prefer the male Tinashe, as remixed by MNEK.

Jhene does nothing for me.
FKA Twigs while quite similar to Jhene and Tinashe vocally is really in her own lane. I think she's very in tune with what she wants to communicate, and it means her image is very complex yet cohesive. Her music while not always the most accessible, is also very much hers. She's also a pretty captivating performer and her videos are amazing. Tinashe is cool. I don't find anything really surprising about her or her sound, there are a lot of pretty RnB singers who dance well. But she's an amazing performer and her album is one of the best of the year, in my opinion. Solange, I always veer between feeling nothing for her and then really loving her stuff. I like her style more than anything. I'd add Kelela to this list, and I think, along with Twigs, she's one of the more interesting RnB singers out there and I hope she starts getting more attention than she has already. |

Of the 4, I think FKA twigs is my favourite - I wasn't entirely convinced by her at first, but the album has grown on me massively recently, and her EPs are well worth checking out too. I think Solange is great as well - I love the 'True' EP, and I really like her last full-length too, although that one doesn't really fit with the so-called 'alt R&B' sound.
I like what I've heard of Tinashe but am yet to hear 'Aquarius' in full, while Jhene Aiko I think has a lot of potential but is yet to release anything that has really grabbed me. Someone else mentioned Kelela - I love her mixtape and can't wait to hear where she goes from there. As for others, SZA and Banks spring to mind as far as females are concerned, but there are plenty of promising male R&B artists around too! |

FKA Twigs is exactly what was needed to pop up this year, some completely original and interesting music / video and performance art.
I'm excited for where she'll go next! |
