Why does changing the Master into a woman (if, indeed that's actuially on the cards) change what the show is about? Surely it's about the entertaining / dastardly villanny he / she gets up to?

As said twice in the show, this is inaccurate.

I'd love a female Master! A really interesting way to rejuvenate a rather spent character.

A female Master would be excellent. It would bring a whole different spin to the character. I just hope if Missy is the Master they have a flashback scene with the regeneration.

No it's already been established on the show itself that it is possible and has happened before.

My take on it it is rare but not unknown and maybe some Time Lords like The Corsair are more prone to it.

Or maybe the reason it's rare is it happens to Time Lords who have been given a new regeneration cycle if Missy if The Master that could be the reason it's not happened before.

Either way it can and has happened.

I really don't get some people I'm sure they would sooner have a crap white man playing the part than a woman or non white actor/actress who was amazing.

I just want the best person for the job if that is a white man fair enough but if a woman or non white actor/actress goes in and blows them away and is the very best they saw I don't see why not.

I agree don't cast them just because they are female or non white just change things up that would annoy me but so would hiring a white man just to keep up with tradition when better people auditioned.

If she's the Master though, we might get stuck with her. I'm tired of Moffat's dominatrix characters; don't see the male characters using their sexuality to get what they want.

Tbh, in Who the only characters I can think of off the top of my head that fit that bill are River Song and Captain Jack.

Fair enough. My only problems with it (that arc, actually) was the clumsy, sudden insertion of Mels and the lack of reaction to losing the baby. There should have been clues to Mels and some more grief stricken Amy and Rory. That River turned out to be their baby wasn't a problem for me.

Well to be fair Amy never used her sexuality to get what she wanted she just threw a tantrum and sulked until she got what she wanted.

In fairness, she decided to kill herself to get what she wanted, the love of her life alive, in one of my favourite episodes.

I never really got that as it was so out of character for her the rest of the time she treated Rory like something she had trodden in that is the one and only episode where she acted like she gave a damn about him.

It's so the only episode where I remotely liked her as for once she came across as nice.

I think that I wouldn't mind a female Master. Because for one, I think there are ways to do it as opposed to conventional regenerations. And as a couple of other posters have said a great actress could do a great job. There is also the opportunity to see a very different take on the Master which is from a female perspective and how that could work as a dynamic in against with The Doctor.

But there's no way that I'd want to see a female Doctor. As other posters have said that's a core essence of the show. The Doctor is the main character, the Master is on it very rarely. That's why I'd find it much easier to accept a female Master than I would a female Doctor.

Not that bothered either way.

Although I think it would be much simpler to use Rani rather than the Master, there's no point rehashing the Master when there is a Master-Like Evil Timelady waiting to be used.

Similar to gender swapping the Doctor, its nice that the precedent is there, why should he be restricted to one gender? But it is not a particularly necessary change.

I think I'd much rather see significant development of characters through other means than a 'X character needs to be updated, I know lets swap gender' attitude.

Aw, she potentially committed suicide (again) by jumping off a Manhattan skyscraper and allowed herself to be zapped by a Weeping Angel in her last story just because of Rory. And also resigned herself to a kind of death in The Girl Who Waited. Shows some commitment. Give the lass a break.

Like I said though in the Angles I really saw that as out of character for her in every other episode she was very selfish and very sulking she put Rory down every chance she got and made it clear she only put up with him because The Doctor didn't want her in that way.

I don't know if we were supposed to dislike her or if it was just bad writing but I didn't like her from The 11th Hour and she came across as a very nasty-- self centred and sulky person now if she had been written the way she was in Angles all the way though I would have really liked her.
