Quite a nice comparison here. The nexus 5 is a year old (the m8 is newer) but it looks like it will be around for another 12 months. The big draw is that its about half the price of the m8.
But if I were you I'd make a short list and then nip into a store tomorrow where you can see them side by side and compare - then nip to Argos and buy your chosen one

this is nexus 6 is about to come out and if i were to add £250 i can get the m8 which is miles better?
tbh i have them narrowed down to those two...m8 or s5 or nexus 5
Nexus 6 is a very different beast and will be way above the £300 mark (sadly). Prices should be out in the next few days but could be a similar price to the Argos m8 price.

hmmm may go for the m8....alot to part with though
You could buy the phone, and when it comes to October, you can opt for a sim-only deal. That will work out cheaper than getting a phone and sim contract.
Its what I have done this time. Bought the phone from an on-line retailer, then got a 12 month sim only contract for £13 (unlimited minutes and texts, 6GB 4G data and sky sports for 6 months).
Otherwise, you seem to be restricted to a range of Samsung phones and it would be up to you to take your pick. I'm a bit biased against Samsung as I once had a Samsun Ace (I think it was the first generation which came out) which was shite. It keep turning itself off at random and was laggy as hell. But some here probably swear by Samsung.
