Tom Kerridge goes retro with his pineapple upside down cake and chicken Kiev recipes on his Tom Kerridge's Best Ever Dishes cooking show, taking us back in time, but why do some foods go out of fashion?

This is something I have often wondered about. After all, fish and chips has been around longer than most other popular foods but that combo don't look as though it will be confined to history any time soon.

Chicken Kiev and pineapple upside down cake sounds like a thing of the past by their very name. However, credit to Tom to try to revive them, I might even be tempted to have a go at making them myself one day as a alternative to fish and chips. Not sure when though.

Things become corny and end up on every menu in the world, see prawn cocktail in the 80's. Then chefs realise that actually you can make them great dishes so bring them back.

I think you'll find pubs, restaurants and supermarkets do a good trade in Chicken Kievs.

I don't see it on that many menus these days, certainly not as many as it used to be.

IMO as soon as things become mass produced they go out of fashion because they are not as good as the original or people just get fed up of eating them. My pineapple upside down cake has never gone out of fashion mainly because it's lovely and I only make it a few times a year.
