Gmail on iOS - push?
roadshow2006

I'm quite a big user of email both on my phone, on my computer, and web based at work. I use Gmail and I'm struggling a bit to get something satisfactory for my iPhone 6 Plus.

I don't really like the way the Gmail app operates and I'm using various apps which come with Push but none are as slick as the default Mail app. That said archiving and deleting looks less straight forward.

How do people use Gmail on their iPhone for Push? Would you recommend moving mail providers?

Years ago this used to work fine as you could add the Gmail account as an Exchange account and it supported push perfectly. Google decided to discontinue this and since then it's been IMAP access only on iOS.

I switched to Outlook.com the new Hotmail. Prefer the web interface, works brilliantly with the new Office 2013 Outlook desktop programme, and push on iOS.

You can set it to send as your gmail.com address if needed by using Gmail SMTP servers. So if I reply to an email that someone sent to my Gmail address when I reply it comes from that same gmail address.

What don't you like about the official Gmail app?

It uses Push, and is IMO better than the native Mail app.

On a related note, have you read about Google's new email app called Inbox?

A simplistic description would be Gmail with much better auto-labels/tabs and a touch of Google Now.

I've been using it this week (after having used the Gmail app ever since Google Sync was killed), and although it's rather odd at first I quite like it.

Can't you make gmail the default mail account on an iPhone? I have it on my iPad Air. (not yet on 8.1).

Yes you can, but that won't solve the OP's problem.

I use a combination of the Gmail app and the standard Mail app. The Gmail app to get the push notifications and then the standard Mail app once I know I have new email.

Google services just aren't very good on iOS devices - I wonder why...

That's not true at all. In general, Google services are very good on iOS devices and sometimes get features before their Android counterparts. It's in Google's own interests to make good iOS apps that people want to use.

Give an example where a Google iOS app has got features before Android.

Hangouts app, major update to Google+ app, major redesign of Google Maps.

Google's iOS apps are far better than they used to be.

Two things in particular that I love:

- Single sign in, so you only login to one Google app.

- They all connect to each other, so you can go from Gmail to Google Plus to Maps to Chrome etc., without ever touching Safari or Mail or Apple Maps. Given that Apple doesn't allow default apps to be changed, it's bloody handy for people like me who prefer Google's.
