Lidl Veg better than Waitrose Veg?
Well that's the conclusion I have come to here!
Both shops are opposite each other and the only ones in walking distance where I live. I like my organic food and there is not much of a range organic wise in lidl. But my mum decided to try Lidl for a change, and the veg is wonderful, the Celery very green and crisp, same with the courgettes - which always tend to be bendy and off colour from wait rose! And the Broccoli is very brightly green and tasty looking. The veg in waitrose though leaves little be desired! How and why is this possible? Wait rose is meant to be the elite |

I've found Lidl veg to be a bit hit and miss in the past. Sometimes it's fine, but sometimes it goes bad very quickly.

Lidl's tomatoes on the vine are wonderful.

Impossible to compare - the branches of Lidl and Waitrose in one town may not be up to standard with branches in others. They might not have enough staff putting out fresh produce as often, or removing veg that's past its best quickly enough. My student son works at Lidl, and staff are told to look at the fruit and veg as they pass it, and to take off any item that they wouldn't buy themselves due to its look / condition automatically - they don't need to seek permission, just do it they're told. They don't sell organic because Lidl keep costs down doing that - nor do they employ cleaners - the staff who are working up until the shop closes at 10.00 pm have to clean the store / mop the floors etc. before they can go home ! I regularly shop at Lidl and have found their veg to be really great quality. The poster who said the peppers went off quickly was very unlucky - if firm when bought they last at least 2 weeks in the fridge.

In the Netherlands Lidl claimed the top spot for fruit and veg for the fifth time in a row.
They used to be crap, but they changed from buying on the spot market to buying from regular suppliers on long term contracts. That has made a huge difference in quality. |

Lidl source mainly from local suppliers, which is why you get a bit more variation than the big supermarkets. The veg actually tastes like what it's supposed to.

Waitrose is very over priced I feel. they know they are and their customers don't mind. A bit like M&S.

I love Lidl but their veg shelf life is their downfall IMO - thought it was just me! |

I love Lidl veg! It's better than any other supermarket IMO and a hell of a lot cheaper, the on the vine tomatoes are delicious! We always struggled to afford a lot of veg when we used to shop in Sainsburys but now we come home with 2 huge bags full!

I can't speak for Waitrose as we don't have them in Northern Ireland but Lidl does appear to be better for fruit and veg than Asda or Tesco. Judging by the number of people who go into our local Lidl in the mornings, a lot of people agree.
