My sky box is connected to my TV with an optical cable and my home cinema speakers / DVD player is connected to the TV by HDMI.

The sound comes through the speakers fine but I can't control the volume from the SKY remote and have to actually get up to change the volume. I know, I bet your all recoiling in horror at what I've just written

It used to work o.k and I've no idea why or when it stopped working, it was either when I upgraded my sky box or when I took the whole lot apart to give it a clean.

Any ideas would be welcome.

How was it controlling the sound before? Assuming it was CEC I'd look at those settings on the TV first - what TV do you have? Also what home cinema.

It was controlled by the Sky remote, the TV audio settings are set to home theater.

The TV is a Sony Bravia KDL40W5500

The home cinema is one of these http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16882676121

Have you tried resetting the code in the Sky remote?, it's 0533 for a Sony TV.

Yes - I've tried a few times and on different remotes.

I have remote control on my smartphone - that does control the sky volume

Edit: I should add, when I press the volume up / down on the sky remote it adjusts the TV volume, the TV volume graphic comes up, but as audio comes through the home cinema it is of no use. It is the Samsung home cinema I need to adjust

Check your settings on the TV and the Surround System, make sure BOTH have HDMI-CEC enabled - I'm presuming the TV has ARC?, and your Surround system is connected via that specific HDMI socket?.

Assuming that's all correct, then the TV remote (including the Sky remote) will control the surround volume via the HDMI lead from the TV.

I suspect you perhaps plugged the surround system back in the wrong HDMI socket when you disconnected it to clean?.

But going from your original post you were controlling the home cinema with the Sky remote before, that's why I asked the question about the CEC setting on your TV as with that set changing the TV volume (as the Sky remote is doing) can alter the home cinema instead of the TV. It is easy to accidentally turn that feature off so it stops working.

I'm not familiar with CEC on Sony TVs it may be called something different (Viera link for Panasonic) so maybe someone else can help you with that.

That happened to me recently. I even came on here to enquire why. Turns out the wife had put a framed picture on the TV stand and it was just in front of the sensor and, therefore, blocking the remote signal. What a tit I felt....

What did your wife say when you felt it?

Every year in December we get a number of calls for 'remote not working', and it's simply people putting Christmas cards in front of the IR sensors
