Colour problem with Sony Bravia TV
Hi. The colours on my Sony Bravia TV have all gone wrong! Model number is KDL 37S550. They have an oily look about them - like something is wrong with the contrast. It seem worse in indoor scenes than it does outdoors one.
It's definitely the TV that is the issue as opposed to the Sky box. I took my other TV into the room and plugged the exact same plug into that and the picture on there was fine. Anyone have any idea on the issue, or if it is worth getting it fixed? The TV is about five years old so out of warranty. It came from Comet anyway!! I've included some links to show the picture. http://s38.photobucket.com/user/myph...nytv1.jpg.html http://s38.photobucket.com/user/myph...nytv2.jpg.html http://s38.photobucket.com/user/myph...nytv3.jpg.html Thanks to anyone who can help.

Looks like the start of solarization to me, if it is this could mean a faulty t con board, main board or panel. The t con board is the most likely to be at fault.
Both the boards can be replaced by a service engineer or if competent you could do it yourself, no idea on the cost. If its the panel I doubt very much its worth fixing. Nigel Goodwin repairs Sony TV's, I'm sure he'll be able to advise you on the likely cause and costs to repair in more detail. |

Yes, looks like T-Con or LCD panel (the T-Con is part of the LCD panel, and only 'sometimes' available separately).
Probably not worth doing, even a T-Con board is pretty expensive (when available). |

Thanks for the advice. I figured it probably wouldn't be economically repairable!

Surely a Sony shouldn't be BER at only 5 years ?
That's pretty poor. I might expect a cheapie to be BER at that age, but not a supposedly premium brand. |

Also, assuming the panel is still available?, it's likely to be cheaper to replace a panel in a Sony set than in any other make - but you're still looking at pretty much the same price as a new TV. |

It's down to percentage of such failures, and Sony are FAR more reliable than the cheaper brands.

And as for the parts - again, I'd expect Sony, Samsung, Panasonic et al to retain spares support for that kind of time. An unbranded 'cheapie' less so, because as you regularly point out, they are 'unbranded' products with limited support. Therefore it's a bit of an accepted risk the parts won't be available. |

Not much consolation if you've paid Sony prices (£££s) only for the set to be BER at the time you might expect a lesser brand to have failed.

An unbranded 'cheapie' less so, because as you regularly point out, they are 'unbranded' products with limited support. Therefore it's a bit of an accepted risk the parts won't be available. But essentially a manufacturer will make (or buy in) a certain number of extra parts for a set, based on the expected failure rate over the life of the set. Once that supply of parts has gone, there aren't any more - unless you can manufacture some extra ones, something which is likely to be highly non-economic. In the case of an LCD panel (such as under discussion here), the panels are 'bought-in', so there's no chance of making more as the manufacturer wouldn't be interested in doing so. In the case of a set under five year warranty, Sony would replace with a brand new set if the panel (or other part) isn't available. For a set out of warranty, they would offer a new set for the price of replacing the LCD panel, when it was last available. |

I had a 4.5 year old Sony 37" tv with exactly the same issue about twelve months ago. It was purchased from a Sony Centre, came with a free 5 year warranty and a quick phone call had it resolved.
Engineer arrived at agreed time to investigate. Tv was taken away and a few days later Sony called to offer me a brand new replacement Tv. Replacement was delivered a few days later. Fantastic service from all concerned. |

That's because the new panel was no longer available - but for a 4.5 year old set, it's a better outcome!
