Christmas specials should be far more 'canonized'

To the point where it wouldn't matter if you watched it or not. When it's Christmas, I want to see The Doctor and Clara in a winter wonderland with robot Santas and flying Christmas trees, not in Trenzalore, which I must say is the most depressing planet ever, the same episode which the Doctor decides to regenerate.

"A Christmas Carol" was the perfect example of what a Christmas special should be. If you don't watch it, that's fine, you don't come back to the next series and think "what have I missed?" It was interesting and Christmassy without a continuation or beginning of a storyline. "The Runaway Bride" and "Voyage of the Damned" was the same.

Don't get me wrong, the Christmas specials have been enjoyable, but the last couple have been too storyline-involved and I feel with Jenna's possible exit, this Christmas is leading down the same path. Christmas specials are best left alone and separate to the main series.

I think the Christmas Invasion is probably one of the best. It mattered, was important enough and had a fairly decent story. There was a reason for the Christmas elements. I feel that there is often too much shoe horning of Christmas elements into an episode that detracts from it.

A Christmas Carol is good because it has a nice appeal and doesn't make too much of the christmas. The Whimsy was nice, but I wouldn't want it all the time.

TO be fair most times I would just like another adventure, with no forced christmas stuff in it.

My favourite is definitely The Snowmen which manages to mostly stand alone with no tie in with the overall 'mystery' until the very end scenes where the Doctor realises who she was. Him going off on his search gave it an upbeat ending too and the Victorian setting with the snow really works for Christmas.

I'm so bored of the Victorian era appearing in the Christmas episodes, it's really beginning to tire now. They need to try something different!

I do understand why but I have to say most of my favourite Christmas eps have had that era in them. The Snowmen utilised it best for me though.

I prefer it when they're tied in personally. Both Snowmen and Time of the Doctor rate higher than The Next Doctor, The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe, Voyage of the Damned, The Runaway Bride and A Christmas Carol. The exception is The Christmas Invasion which I think had the balance just right.

Don't get me wrong, they all have their good points but I just felt there was more to the last two then the ones that came previously. But then I'm someone who believes Who is at it's best when it's more serialized than episodic. I think I'm in the minority these days who think Series 6 has been the strongest series to date.

I'm bored of the christmas episodes to some extent. It has to be christmas, it has to snow and to some extent the writing is secondary to everything else. granted last years wasn't really about christmas as such (bar the name). I didn't like A Christmas carol or the The Doctor, the widow and the wardrobe. It seems that as long as its a christmas theme then that should do. give me a decent script and story and I'd be far more happy.

Yeah. I'd also like the Christmas story to be low-continuity, since quite a few people
would tune in then who aren't necessarily regular viewers.
