Need to buy a budget TV fairly urgently. This seems to fit the bill. Will not be used for gaming but would an 8.5ms response time be good for watching sports (mainly football)?

Finlux are Vestel, so it's the same as many other cheap sets - so probably as good as anything else in the price range you're looking at.

Only way to know if it meets your requirements is to buy one and use it.

Richer Sounds have a 40" Blaupunkt (probably a Vestel or Orion set), but they are providing a 5 year warranty, which for a cheap set like that is probably worth having.

As far as I'm aware the Blaupunkt badge is normally used on Vestel sets.

Thanks, that one does look similar but only has a Freeview SD tuner by the looks of it. The one on Amazon has an HD tuner.

I'm tempted to go for the 40" £299 Samsung Freeview HD at Argos now instead, they seem to be giving £10 vouchers out when you spend over £100 at the moment, plus I could spend my nectar points too. Don't know what warranty Argos do.

It'll be a standard 12 month warranty - alternatively John Lewis sell it http://www.johnlewis.com/samsung-ue4...ew-hd/p1461311 with a 5 year warranty.

For what's it worth, in the UK and Europe the Blaupunkt brand is currently licensed to UMC of Slovakia who also make most of Tesco's Technika range. Their list of Blaupunkt models and manuals is here.
Also see their website http://www.umc-slovakia.sk/company/blaupunkt/

Interestingly, in September this year, UMC also acquired Sharp's Polish TV factory and use of the brand in Europe. It promises to raise production there.

Thanks for that, funnily enough I've scrapped a Technika this morning

Presumably this is to do with Sharp pulling out of the UK entirely at the end of the year?

The link given by the previous poster points out that UMC have acquired Sharp's European AV operation

"Sharp Corporation of Japan (Sharp) and Universal Media Corporation /Slovakia/ s.r.o. (UMC) have entered into a binding agreement related to transfer of SHARP’s audio and video business (AV) in Europe. The signatures follow a resolution at Sharp board of directors’ meeting earlier today.
UMC will be getting exclusive brand license rights for both the television business as well as the audio business in Europe. As part of the brand licensing, Sharp will support the design &
development of LCD televisions produced and sold by UMC under Sharp brand."

So I doubt the Sharp name will be disappearing from the high-street. It's very similar to the Philips situation whereby TPV are now producing Philips TV's under licence.

No idea on the Philips deal?, but it sounds to me that Sharp are pulling out of Europe (not just the UK) and simply selling the rights to use the Sharp name to UMC - as most Sharp TV's are just Vestel sets anyway, not 'too much' of a change (one cheap brand to another).

However, whereas Sharp currently have 'reasonable' service and spares facilities it makes you wonder if UMC will do the same?.

I bought a 32" Sharp from them in January with a 5 year guarantee for £230. The tuner doesn't receive HD but the picture quality from external receivers is pretty good although I had to adjust it myself. The sound on the internal speakers isn't up to much though.
