I am glad i am not the only one to not like it and I have only seen it in videos.
at least they are basing it on actual usage though, thus opinion has value.
you're not, thus opinion has no value.

This have nothing really to do with usage, it is what it looks like and you can see that on a video.

You'd think the white background would use more battery, i assume it would rather than a dark background?
I don't think it would make any difference for an LCD display, the lighting is provided by back (or side) lighting and is usually at a constant level* with the actual coloured pixels infront of this lighting acting as filters. So white uses less filtering, black uses lots, the actual illumination is the same, hence why a black led display shows white clouding if viewed in dark conditions, you're seeing the white light behind the black pixels.

This of course is an incredibly simplified non technical example and I fully expect pedants to poopoo this entirely

*backlighting does vary of course by the light sensor adjusting for local lighting conditions. OLED / AMOLED work differently so I believe white lighting would use more battery to illuminate but conversely use less lighting where darker items are shown, or no lighting where black is displayed.

Actually it does. I saw it on a video as well way back and didnt really like it.

Since trying it properly, actually using it, it's fine. On my G3, LG have put their skin on it which i wasn't really keen on. So i have loaded the proper Google Launcher from Lollipop and the new version of Search to make it work and it looks proper stock like a Nexus.

Same here (I've worked in IT many years).

I'm even tempted not even to install it straight away when it's eventually available on the S5 for a a couple of weeks to make sure there are no problems with the initial release.
Me three. Thats where the "lazy" comment comes from. I work in IT and the last thing I want to do is have to troubleshoot stuff in my free time.

No it don't have anything to do with usage, it is all the white space that I do not like and the look of the recent task screen. that looks really awful to be honest.

the only majorly white bit is the app drawer, not something you are going to be in a lot of the time.

however, as you've been told numerous times now.
if you don't like it then don't update to it... quite simple.
that means you can stop constantly moaning about something you won't have.... oh wait.

Too many light colours. Seems to run very smoothly on a Nexus 5 though.

I go in the app drawer a lot as I prefer to have a minimal amount of shortcuts.

I like the flashlight built into the notification drawer/Quick Settings menu.

They need a fix for the calendar asap. Who thought it was a good idea not to be able to default to a monthly view !

Hate the new soft key icons.

has no-one noticed the WIFI bug for non-US users yet?
if you happen to use channel 12 or 13 then lollipop won't find the wifi network.

I know he seems to like hating on anything that's new, but let's be fair - the new app launcher background is a bit, erm, white. My 2012 Nexus 7 comes with a choice of the original launcher, or the Google Now launcher (the old one being default) and it looks nicer.

I don't see how a huge white box with icons is in any way keeping with the Material Design, and I don't see why it couldn't have had a setting in Display to toggle from light to dark mode, as well as changing the accent colour (as many third party apps now do). I expect it WILL come, as the feedback from those who have upgraded is very mixed.

I don't much like it, but I wouldn't go back to 4.4 over it. Yet, it's disappointing to have to just accept things when Google merely needed to add a few simple setting options.

It sounds trivial but I just despise the new soft key icons. I despise icons that give no clue as to the function. I mean how does a simple circle equate to the home key ? why does a square mean recently opened apps ? The closed triangle how does that signify back ?

Just stupid....

These are things that can be changed and Android 5 on some other devices may well have more options. Themes on Xperia phones, for example, let you change the icons to anything you want.

The Google Now launcher for 4.4 hasn't suddenly changed to white (I hope it doesn't!) so that is also something perhaps specific to the Nexus devices.

I'm still waiting for my Motorola phones to get 5.0, so I wonder how the launcher will look on that, given the Moto G swapped from the generic launcher to Google Now earlier in the year.

They can but I'm guessing you have to root the phone to change the softkey icons.

One issue here is that they offer no visual clue on what they mean which could be a problem for new Android users. I could see nothing wrong with the old icons, perhaps they could have tweaked them a little, but they should still offer some clue to the function.

And they have to fix up the calendar!!! so you can default it to monthly views.

Again this is going to confuse quite a few people.

Android should be intuitive out of the box IMO.

The biggest problem, and I do think noise747 has a point here (but it gets lost by going so OTT on other things) is that iOS and Android - and other OSes and platforms - are now so competitive that it's considered acceptable and beneficial to keep changing things, not just adding new features. A new look gets people talking and taking an interest again, even if the changes are visual changes for change's sake.

So iOS 7 became a totally radical overhaul, that looked a bit Mickey Mouse to me (naturally, many love it), and now Android has once again changed its look massively - after various changes over the years (Android 3 for tablets being one particular big jump that some people loved and others hated).

The problem is that if any of these OSes or apps ever got to what most people considered to be perfection, it wouldn't just end. It would still have to change, and new thinking at the firms would no doubt see someone decide that everything we loved was 'wrong' and now it's time for something new. Much of the time it seems to be down to copying what a rival has done.

Some people love that feeling of something being all new and get excited by it. Working in technology, I certainly don't have any problems with it. But I know my mum gets upset if I move around some icons on her Windows desktop, and expect there are many other people who will do the Android 5 update and be very confused.

Perhaps the Nexus 5 didn't sell massively to 'the general public', or indeed the N4 or N10, but both the Nexus 7s did.

I updated my N5 and N7 via my desktop so don't know if the OTA update results in a 'what's new' tutorial?
