Question: I have just rooted my phone with custom 4.4.2 Kitkat: When/if they ever get around to my phone with the 5.0 update, will this overwrite everything and un-root my phone?

From what i can gather pal if its rooted you cannot receive OTA updates but you could just flash it with 5.0
Looking about it seems to be floating about on the net but homework would be needed cos it may not be the full thing and maybe buggy as hell |

I think it's perfectly fair for some people to not want change forced upon them, but it's the way of the world now and something people will have to get used to.
In days gone by, you bought a bit of software or an operating system and that was it. Later you might have got updates, which could change certain aspects but generally speaking, any radical change was a new bit of software. I know that people have to update somethings, like try running windows 95, 98 or Me these days and you will come unstuck. windows XP is still going and I know a fair few people who still uses it. The same with phones, i know someone who is still using a old HTC phone running gingerbread, i think that is what it is called, still it does what they want, no way it is going to be updated now. My phone while not old, but not really new, also does what I want and yet I will get Google nagging me to update, that is if they update the Nexus 4. Software wise, a update should never change the way it works, I admit they have done, my mate uses Cool edit for music, Adobe took it over, changed the name to Audition and according to my mate mucked it up, by taking useful stuff of it and putting stuff on it that is not required. Also it is now CPU and memory intensive and of all, you can now only get it via subscription I do not think that is a improvement. Adobe does things like that anyway. Thankfully sony did not change the way Vegas works, they just made it better. Quote:
But now it's more about trying to get people to keep paying, so big applications like Office, Adobe and mobile operating systems will update you to a whole new version, with a new look and many things that could confuse those who aren't very technically literate.
I can understand about getting people to keep paying, but some updates are free, like this Lollipop and as far as i know Google do not get money directly for Android anyway. One of the reason phone manufactures have gone for it in droves. It don't confuse me, but I do understand how it can confuse some people. It takes a lot to confuse me software wise, after alll i use three different computer operating systems and different video editing software Quote:
Other services/apps like Facebook and Twitter like to reinvent themselves from time to time. Many people love it and many absolutely detest it, hence the many threads and posts on the Internet. Maybe some are whinging for no good reason, but I do feel some sympathy as I'm sure we've all had changes that we didn't really like.
True, facebook have changed a few times over the years, they seem to have come to their senses now and have kept things the way they are for a while.I have not used twitter for years. \ Quote:
iOS 7 made iOS look far too Mickey Mouse for me. OSX Yosemite also looks dumbed down, but I've still upgraded. Android 5 has loads of new features, so I will upgrade, but I am not sure some of the Material Design is that fantastic or necessary.
A friend of mine put Yosemite on one of her Mac's, but took it off within a week, never to use it again, but that is the thing, she is not forced to update to it or get bugged about it and as far as I know the same with IOS on Ipad or Iphones.Quote:
What's more, even if I did love it and think it the best thing ever, I have to prepare for the fact that Google will change it in the next year or so anyway.
I doubt very much if Android 6 will be produced for my phone or tablet, both will be well out of date by then.Quote:
Ultimately, we get radical changes to spark up some new excitement and many changes are for the sake of change.
Excitement, do people really get excited by a new Os these days? A few years back maybe as there was something new normally to be excited about. Now it is just the same thing repackaged. A new Os a few years back would bring more stability with it, but a lot of them are pretty stable now, when was the last time your Android phone crashed? That is you have a android phone. Even Windows is pretty stable these days, and that includes Windows XP. i know updates do more than stability and bring secuirty with them, but I think sometimes they change some things for no reason at all. MS with the new windows 10, we all know why that have changed, it is because very few people like windows 8. Quote:
As I said early on, Android 5 is very much 'meh' to me. I hope my N5 and Nexus 7s get updated soon. I might possibly try the beta for my G3. Sony has said it's coming. My Moto G (1st and 2nd gen) plus Moto E will be getting it.. so one way or another, it's happening. I never refuse to do upgrades, but even though I think Android 5 is good in the long run, I can foresee a lot of people being confused - with or without the free guide they've published.
As been said the operation of Android five is not much different to previous versions, so getting the hang of it for most people should be fine, but then if you go for say a Samsung phone, they will no doubt stick their own UI and rubbish on it so people will hardly notice the difference.Nexus is a different thing as it is pure Android. i did notice one thing looking at the free guide, is that Android 5 seems to have got rid of the combined SMS and hangout app and gone back to a pure SMS app, Good job as well to be honest. It is this combining things which annoys me and it don't matter what smart phone OS i choose, they alll do it. |

What is the make and model? If you have rooted your handset and installed a custom ROM you may well not be able to get official updates any more.
So a long wait if they ever get around to a 5.0 update after doing all the trendy named phones first. ![]() So whilst the current ROM may have updates turned off (maybe) wouldn't I be able to download the new version 5.0 when/if it comes out and flash that manually? |

http://www.techradar.com/news/phone-...umours-1091500 So get ready to mash that update button on Wednesday so that you get that Material Design goodness. I am sure the someone on XDA will post a download of the image to flash via fastboot if you can't wait for the ota. |

it has already been documented that doing that makes no difference whatsoever. |

Google has never done all the updates in one go, and trying to update one of my iDevices on the day of a new release can be quite frustrating.
To be fair, I've had no issues of late, but think that staggering the releases is a more sensible option. Although, Google could do something in between - namely staging the updates to the vast majority of users who don't know/care about Android 5 yet, but giving those who want to manually update right now the chance to do so. |

Google's blog claimed that a battery drain issue on the N5 has been fixed (and was fixed relatively quickly).

No chance, the S4 will probably not get the update till March next year!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8QETNpd57kk Remember they will still have to do bug fixes and tweaks plus Operator customisations take forever. Here is the Galaxy S5 with Lollipop: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2yBLqnokjPM |

Be wary of some of the early ports of Android 5 to older phones, where a bit more detailed investigation reveals that in some cases certain features don't work/work properly.
By all means look on Xda-developers.com to see what's going on (IMO the best place to find out how to get Android 5 on phones going way back - the Motorola DEFY being one four year old phone now running it!) and also remember that many manufacturers have form for saying they'll update quickly, and then let people down later on. I think it's because many tech sites now like to publish lists of all phones/tablets getting an update, many of which won't be monitored and updated. To be fair, it's not easy to keep tabs on things like this. |

But why should people have to get used it? Updates have been with us for years. Windows 95 and before onwards, but it have not really been forced onto people until say windows 8, where MS more or less push people to update to 8.1.
Updating people is now seen as beneficial and indeed vital, and that means people will have to follow the 'adventure' as a company tinkers with its software for a whole range of reasons - some genuine and some just change for change's sake. |

The Moto G (starting with 2014/2nd Gen) is getting Android 5 today. Indeed, some handsets in the US (single SIM?) have already begun.
I assume the other Moto G models, and even the Moto E, won't be far behind. The Moto G is continuing to provide itself to be an awesome phone! Changes and new features specific to the Moto G: https://motorola-global-portal.custh...il/a_id/102639 |

I totally agree, but that's now how companies want to work now. They want you to update and be ready for the latest features or able to use new services that generate revenue. It's no good having people on old systems that can't run these things, so we get the updates pushed to us whether we like it or not.
Updating people is now seen as beneficial and indeed vital, and that means people will have to follow the 'adventure' as a company tinkers with its software for a whole range of reasons - some genuine and some just change for change's sake. But it is my phone, my computer, my tablet or another other product I got that uses some sort of software. sure I have a licence to use the software, but that do not give them the right to force updates onto me? i can understand if there are updates for say security reason, using MS products for so long you get used to it, but if a update makes the product use different then we should have a choice. While I still think Android is the better OS on smart phones at the moment, I still do not like this forcing system updates. IOS do not do that, they sends info about the update, but once ignore that you do not get bugged about it. |

Thanks for that, I've watched a couple of videos on YouTube, looking forward to the update. It's a very long 62 page quick start guide! Made me chuckle.
![]() I think it should actually be included within all the Android 5 rollouts, and put as an icon on the home screen. Maybe it will be, so apologies to Google if that's going to be the case. The added benefit being that it might just encourage a few users to investigate the other books and magazines available via the Play store. I think companies need to realise that changing things can confuse a lot of people. They don't so much learn the principles of how a user interface works, so can easily adapt, but learn a specific process in more of a step by step fashion - and when any part of that changes, they're stuffed. |

New things, and the old things they do in the same way as they have always done. I don't understand why you make a big deal about this all the time. Any time there's an update your in this section bitching about it. If you don't like the look of it, bloody change it!! This is the good thing about Android, you can change whatever you like. Just install the Nova launcher for instance and change it to KitKat. Simple. Or even better, buy an old Nokia 3310. By what you say, you only use it as a phone anyway and text so it would suit you perfectly and no updates for you to whine about. |
