Lollipop has not gone back to that. Kitkat had a setting in the menu called 'Default Message App' where you could choose hangouts or the pre installed SMS client. Or in fact, any other one you choose to install. lollipop is no different.

And yes we were able to try Lollipop out first. Google released preview versions of it months ago.

As far as i can see that can not be done, you can turn off app updates or get notified about app updates, but you can not turn off system updates.


I got the Nexus because it was a good price for the spec of the phone and it is not locked to any provider. I intend to keep the nexus 4 for as long as it keeps going. It will do the same stuff in 3, 4, 5 or even more that it does now. Ok it don't have 4G, but i am not that bothered and also we don't even have 4g here anyway and no one have any idea when it may come here.

I am not one of these people who have to update to something new just because it is there.
i also like the Nexus because it is pure Android, no bloat ware like Samsung sticks on their products.

Who hate apple? I like their computers, I got to admit I never liked the Iphone even if it was the one that started the smart phone market as we see it now. I do not like this non-standard stuff that Apple seems to chuck on people, but then MS did that with windows, just look at the older versions of Internet Exploder.

But it have changed things, I can change the icons, i can change the animation when I go from one screen to another. I can also now put more icons on the bottom bar, whihc I can not remember the name of now.

So Nova do change things on Kitkat.


Believe what you believe, maybe you try pushing computers a bit more and you will see. The ones we have at work, seems to crash a lot and they not bad specs, and run windows XP, but most days I have to reset one or two as they freeze.


I have not really had a good look at windows 10. I have seen that they have put a new start menu on and the modern UI apps can run on the desktop. I also seen that you can take the tiles off the start menu, but I wonder what that would look like.

I am doing ok with windows 8.1, at the end of the day, the main use is to run Vegas and photoshop, not that I will be using them much for a while until I start using the video camera again and I can concentrate for more than 30 mins without getting tired.


Because as i said before, it is too much hassle to take off.
I will wait until my mate gets it on his Nexus 4 and have a look. He will install it, he is not bothered as long as it works.

As i said, I did not know the app had a fault, but I needed the app and putting the phone back to Dalvik done the job at the time. I may put the phone back to art at some point, but at the moment, it is working ok.

i thought you have researched lollipop. If you have you would have seen that now have a separate app for Hangouts and SMS. Kitkat combined tham. Sure you can use what App you want, but default was the hangout app, which gave you SMS as well.
On Lollipop they have now gone back to separate apps.

it means, should you wish to, you could download the OTA file and manually update the phone yourself by sideloading it on your device.
you need the android sdk tools to do that.

And if you bothered to try lollipop without having a fit every time things change, you would find Its NO different to kitkat!! On the Nexus devices there was only Hangouts which to be honest, is brilliant. free messages or normal SMS without having to fart about with different apps.

On the phone i have now, the G3 and every other phone apart from a Nexus, there has always been - even on Kitkat a separate messaging app. In the settings, even on the Nexus if you bothered to look, there is a setting called Default Message App which allows you to use whatever the hell you like. So you arent tied into anything. That's the beauty with Android. You can change it to whatever way you want it.

No sign of the OTA update on my Nexus 7 (2012 model0. The update file has been posted on-line but I think I will wait for the OTA version to arrive as KitKat is doing pretty well! Looking forward to experiencing Android 5.00 though!

Hope to get my N4 updated before the end of the month. I don't use it as my main handset any more as it had a problem with dropping phone calls, I bought a Moto G 4G which should also update to Lollipop before the end of the year. I miss the screen size on my N4, find the on-screen keyboard on the Moto G fiddly to use.

I plan to use the N4 to learn Lollipop before my current Moto G receives it. Ironically I suspect the Moto G could get it first.

N4 issue of Lollipop has been delayed by the Wifi/IRQ bug draining the battery, looks like it has been fixed on the developer builds. but not rolled out yet as ROM image or OTA.

Kitkat comes as default with the hangout and combined SMS app. Even on my nexus, when I updated to kitkat, my SMS on the dock ( i remember the name now) was removed and hangout app replaced it, and also took over my SMS as default.

Sure I could and did change it all back, but I should not have to.
My problem was that I had no idea at the time that the SMS app would have stayed on the phone and I did not know it was in the play store, thinking that being a app that was in Jelly bean, it would be replaced.

It seems like google thought the whole Hangout combined with SMS was a bad idea as they have now abandoned it in Lollipop and gone back to separate apps.
What annoys me is google thinking they know what we want, like the last update for gmail, a app i never use and yet google decided that i should have all my email accounts using that app, not the email app I already use.

Again, I can change it back, but I should not have to, I should have been asked if I wanted my email accounts linked to the gmail app.

This is what annoys me, they update ad mucks it, not keeping things how I had them

My 2012 nexus 7 has just had it's update

no it's not as i used ART on 4.x and the sky apps work fine on it.

I don't get how slow Sky is at doing anything. My Xperia Z3 (released in October) still isn't compatible (apologies if that changed in the last few days, I got sick of checking recently).

By all means check if a device is rooted, but I am not sure what else Sky has to do in order to approve on a device by device basis, and it doesn't surprise me that they'd make it incompatible with the final runtime even if it worked fine with the pre-release version.

Is it a big difference , can't wait to get a new interface .

Unfortunately my N7 wasn't offered the update tonight, or indeed my Nexus 5 or Moto G.

My nexus 5 got the OTA update at 8pm, all went smooth. Phone feels a bit more nippy but lollipop has broken the widgets that turn mobile data on and off so you have to go through the menus now.

Couldn't wait. I'd downloaded the Android SDK and other files yesterday (following the link posted above) and decided to just try and do the update that way.

Incredibly easy (unexpected). Did Nexus 7 2012 first, with full erase - and while that started up did my Nexus 5, without erasing.

I have to say that I'm SO impressed with Android 5's set up process that now lets you select a device to restore from and the individual apps you want to install. None of this download nothing or everything nonsense that almost seemed random before.

Stupid of me to do this at this time of night though, as I'll probably not get any sleep now.

EDIT; Seems the N5 did full erase anyway. Obviously messed up editing the script, but no matter - given restoring is so easy.

EDIT 2: Wow. It's SO much better now. Within seconds I can see my old wallpaper, and all the icons for the apps I had on my home screen - as it downloads the apps and app data.

It's quite incredible (and I'm not usually easily impressed - especially given my earlier 'meh' comments about Android 5).

Mind you, I do think the Material Design on everything is a bit flat and boring. And as I said before, even if you get to love it, you know that Google will change it to something else in a year or two.
