I am glad I do not use anything from sky then, it was bad enough when the Halifax app went belly up.

That explains it. I am glad i went for the Nexus 7, could have done with a larger screen, but it does the job.
Using it more now, it is useful for skype.

Maybe you do, but I think you are missing the point in that this started off because I said I did not like the look of Lollipop and then you and other s just started going nuts as if it was a crime not to like something.



People should be free to do what they want unless it breaks the law, they should not have to be forced to follow other people, just because some company or government for that matter want to make even more millions.

Just because I like some of the older stuff, don't mean I am stuck in the past. the problem is with people is that they are too quick to chuck the old stuff away because they think it is old tech.
This is why our landfuill is filling up with millions of mobile phones and other electronic stuff. think how may TV sets was chucked out when we went digital. TV sets that was good, still working fine and would still work fine even when analogue was switched off , by just adding a cheap digital box.

I will try and keep things until they go wrong or do not do the job I want. the Midi system attached to this computer is over 20 years old, been fixed twice, but it still does what I want, so no reason to chuck it.
My old canon printer was over 5 years old, done the job and yet some people would have replaced it long before now, because they want new. I have replaced it now, but only because the print head went belly up.
My plasma is over 6 years old, again I have no reason to replace it unless it goes belly up, even if does take a bit too much energy. I have a old JMB 28 inch CRT in my bedroom, the only reason the plasma replaced it is because I had the plasma as a gift.

This computer is 4-5 years old, ok I have updated some stuff, video card, and put a better sound card in, and yes i am hoping to update the board and CPU next year because I need something a bit more powerful.

But the old bits are not getting dumped, I am going to give them to a mate of mine who will make use of them.

Is listening to vinyl so outdated for you, I suppose Cd is as well, since a lot of people uses MP3 these days. I do use MP3 by the way, I got a load on my PS3 and on my phone.

I bet there are very few people who watches 99% of their video entertainment on line, all these people with their out of date linear Tv via satellite/terrestrial. but I do not accept change, yet I have changed the way I watch video.

Sometimes staying with the same boring things as you put it is better than things mucking up. I will change settings, after all did i not originally change the runtime of my Nexus 4 to Art, remember Kitkat do not use art as default, so I would have to change it, but I do not change settings.

Why would I panic, according to you I can refuse to install them and not get bugged about it, or is this just more crap?

Look at some of the comments under the article, not many that got anything good to say about this update.

Think i will wait for OTA for my Nexus 4 and have a play about with it before installing on my G3 whenever that arrives.Its been released in Poland so should be availible soon.

Side loaded it onto my Nexus 5 yesterday. So far really like it, its just a quick as kitkat, battery seems fine so far (though bit early to really tell).
only really let down (maybe not set it up right ) is interruptions, was hoping to replace silent time app. but interruptions has its own ideas.
set the times for when I'm in bed to only get calls and msgs from starred contacts. tested it with non starred contact number and texts still come through so kind of pointless to use as a do not disturb if texts from anyone can disturb you.
other than that i like the changes and the way it looks and operates. was thinking of getting an iPhone 6 but this will probably make me stay with the nexus now

If you're in Priority mode and tap a bell icon, it goes grey, and phone gets silent! And alarms work. Strangely any amount of tapping on a bell or volume rocker doesn't bring sound back. You'll need to exit Priority mode to bring sound back.

wouldn't call that a solution to be honest.
more of a workaround.

a set alarm should never get silenced no matter what mode the phone happens to be in.
it defeats the purpose of setting an alarm in the first place.

in my opinion this new notification alert system simply does work.
i want to be be able to enable full sound move, vibrate only, or silent at the touch of a button like 4.x had.

priority settings should then sit underneath that to show what notifications you want to override the system wide setting.

on a side note, we still have apps that don't follow system wide vibrate modes. whatsapp a prime example. the app itself has a vibrate option that seems to overide the system vibrate setting. with the whatsapp vibrate setting enabled it plays a sound AND vibrates on a notification. if you turn off the whatsapp vibrate option, it then disables vibrate for that app even when the phone is in vibrate mode only - thus you don't get told of an incoming notification - this problems existed in 4.x as well though.

If I update to 5.0 OTA can I root my previously unrooted nexus device after?

Well using a pin lock i now get a screen with a swipe to call, use camera and unlock which then leads to a screen that i can put my pin in to finally unlock the phone.

your right, on kitkat and ice cream, if you had a pattern or pin lock and the screen was off , push the power button lead straight to the pattern of pin lock screen.
now the power button press leads to a swipe up to un lock right for camera left for phone. then you put the pattern or pin in. so one extra step

Well in fairness, halifax fixed it in 2 days. Sky is just utterly shocking at updates.

There has always been the choice of either directly going to the PIN/password entry or going to the lock screen first (so that you can use lockscreen widgets/notifications). Depends on the manufacturer whether they expose this setting or not. For example, HTC Sense allows you to choose.

Don't think you need to react so hysterically when, again, you don't have the full picture.

this is the problem with other phone manufactures bulking up Android and stickign their own crap on it, this is why some of the phones like Samsungs who should run nice and fast are like snails.

You cannot change back to Dalvik.

The way apps are compiled from here on will make them incompatible with Dalvik as the compilation process is different.

Priority interruptions works perfectly for me - if a non-starred contact texts or calls, it does still come through but doesn't make a noise or wake the phone, so doesn't disturb. Are you saying that yours still sounds the notification sound? That sounds like something has gone wrong.


On one hand you could argue this, yes. On the other hand, you could equally argue that having an alarm sound in spite of the mode of the phone defeats the purpose of putting the phone on silent in the first place. If you put the phone into "NONE" mode, it does say in clear red writing "not even alarms", so I don't imagine people will be accidentally missing alarms left, right and centre.


I assume the aspect of Skiplock you're referring to specifically is keeping the phone unlocked via Wi-Fi, since Skiplock's 'unlock via Bluetooth' functionality is replicated in "Smart Lock" (which, by the way, is pretty awesome). At I/O it was suggested that Smart Lock would also work for Wi-Fi, so it seems odd that this functionality hasn't made it into the final build. I would imagine a Skiplock update may bring this back, however.
