Japan tells Networks to unlock phones for free
Everything Goes
03-11-2014
Mobile phone locking has been a bug bear for many but things are changing in Japan with the Government insisting that phones will be either unlocked when you get them or will be unlocked for free otherwise.

Quote:
“From May next year, all mobile phones sold in Japan will either arrive unlocked or be able to be unlocked.

An edict from Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications has stipulated that the mobile phone operators will have to unlock phones free of charge if the customer requests it. This is aimed at making the pricing more competitive.

Other countries and regulatory authorities will no doubt be watching the way the Japanese market shifts as a result of the new ruling.

Japan certainly wasn't the first country to do this.

Anyone remember the good old days when SIM cards used to be glued in?

I don't remember the SIM ever being glued into any phone, but I do remember the days of network logos and software junking up every phone an making things look ugly.

Think Apple killed that trend, glad of it!

Wasn't that just 3 when they were getting reamed by "box breakers" who would buy the phones at the subsidised price and sell them and the SIM separately?

(I'm guessing this must happen now, those cheap mobile broadband SIMs on eBay have to come from somewhere)
