For me, this is the ultimate cliffhanger. Not least because she is my all time favourite soap character, but was also an original cast member and we had grown up with her
http://youtu.be/20OFPHYm7sA Also, straight after the episode aired in Australia, this aired which further led people to believe she was dead. The show went off air for six weeks in Australia during which time the Seven network launched a massive "Will Sally Survive?" campaign http://youtu.be/kESb_UX9490 |

The reveal of murdering Silas as Heidi's dad. Certainly kept me on my seat.

That Sons & Daughters one is MENTAL! I actually had to Google it to see if it was real!
I'd like to nominate the final scene of The Colbys. Nothing has ever come near this for OTT. See Fallon's legendary surprise here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ju8YH6ewoqQ |

It's a shame the video doesn't show it to the very end http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/image...19207207_5.jpg |

This finale from Dallas is a proper wtf moment. Bobby had died at the end of the previous season and his wife Pam wakes up at the end of the following season's finale to find that whole season had been a dream

That Sons and Daughters cliffhanger was a bit too over the top (silly) for my tastes. It actually came late in the show's run, when the ratings in Australia had started to slip. That show had had some earlier cliffhangers that were better in my opinion, like this one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DfDu16n-Yyo
My all time favourite cliffhanger episode is the 1974 end of year cliffhanger from Australian soap 'Number 96'. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0663236/combined It is no longer on youtube but is on DVD. The episode explores the following main storylines: The pantyhose murderer still has the residents living in fear. Dorrie and her lodger and life long friend Flo are rivals in the elections for President of their Senior Citizens club. Gay couple Don and Dudley masquerade as two straight men as Don's sister Carol (who is staying in their flat) is dating a raging homophobe, Brad. Brad insist on a dinner out with Don and Dud's girlfriends so Dudley picks up two giggly girls in the wine bar for the dinner. Brad is annoyed when no one wants to go clubbing (the girls need to be home by 11 and Dud is staying the night with his aunt who has been unwell) so goes home with Carol to stay the night with her. Arnold Feather is called for an interview in Canberra for a hotel job in Tahiti. His wife Patti happily (and successfully) arranges his flights so he will make the interview in time, as it is later that evening. Later, Patti announces to Dorrie and Herb that Arnold got the job and they will be leaving Number 96 and moving to Tahiti! Cliffhangers: Dorrie loses the election to Flo. Fearing that the boasting Flo will be impossible to live with, Dorrie declares she will ask her to move out. During the night, Brad leaves the sleeping Carol creeps into Don's bedroom and tries to get into bed with him, declaring "I'm crazy for you Don. Can I sleep with you, please!?" Arnold arrives home late, as neighbour Andy is heading out. He invites Andy in to the flat as he called Patti three hours earlier about his successful interview and she was going to go buy some champagne, so perhaps Andy would like to join the celebration? They enter the flat and discover that Patti has been strangled to death by the pantyhose murderer. My other favourites include the Dynasty Moldavian massacre which someone else already posted, and the 'Prisoner' fire: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Agay4DPVrHc. |

The Sunset Beach earthquake was pretty epic at the time, and produced some great cliffhangers. This is when the quake hit: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6YsXdliOZqU
And this is when the tsunami hit the cruise ship: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cJ46c8saOgs#t=286 The Bold and the Beautiful: Sheila shoots Taylor and Brooke (pretty epic music): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fheJs...oR7-ae7w#t=332 Neighbours 1997 season finale was one their most memorable cliffhangers: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gMrOuyqkhF4#t=952 Days of our Lives Coronation Massacre: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p08Xmgrwl6I Emmerdale plane crash (epic, but I don't think the episode should have ended on Jack/Sarah): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zqs6SmShZ7M#t=932 |

This one from Falcon Crest was effective in the day: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hOyFWR2cp-E
A bit tame compared to the Dynasty and Days of our Lives shootings already posted though. |

Melrose Place: Kimberley blows up the apartment complex. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nVTsPpKbS3U
Also from Melrose Place: Kimberley reveals her hideous scar (this was pretty shocking at the time, IIRC). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ICyYiJiDGN0 |

They were dramatic alright but they never included natural disasters, massacres or aliens. Even the two season wonder that was Flamingo Road got in on the act when their finale included a character being shot dead only to be resurrected through voodoo. |

Some suspect they got the idea for the Melrose Place bomb https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tiX1SnOe4kc#t=392 from the Number 96 bomb https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k4x-eJvn0H8
Knots Landing might not have done too many flashy cliffhangers, but for anyone that followed the storyline of Val's kidnapped twins, this cliffhanger was stunning: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ppj7tI0UkE8 In an early KL cliffhanger Sid Fairgate drove his car off a cliff https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vuaV_Wvzx4M |

I can't believe I forgot the final episode of Eldorado! I loved The Rado ...
- Blair does a runner after being caught selling drugs, leaving the Lockhead family shocked and desperate. - Freddie has a date, helping him to recover from Javier's death. - Olive has a job, helping her recover from debt problems. - Roberto and daughter-in-law Ingrid kiss, and she runs off. - Rosemary is frantic about husband Stanley's disappearance: there's a knock at the door, and a woman claims to be Stanley's wife. - Marcus is thought dead in a car bomb: Trish (rightly) blames Alex but he threatens her and reminds her that she has only just married him. Pilar and Marcus are reunited and sail into the sunset on his yacht. Brilliantly done. ![]() I miss The Rado ...

One great (clever and unexpected) Knots Landing cliffhanger https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uUu6SSDN_yk
Here's the KL hotel lobby shooting https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XRKz1WLMBlA Another goodie from Falcon Crest was the (lethal) plane crash which had a good suspenseful buildup (and recalled Airport `77!) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9HesKuMeZ2Q Unfortunately the resolution https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9HesKuMeZ2Q was a bit of a let down for me. Similar to Dynasty's Moldavian massacre the resolution is a smaller-scale affair where the top stars troop out one by one and announce the deaths (of the supporting characters - who most viewers could guess would have been scripted to die.) |
