Not always. My wife bought me a Linn Basik turntable for our 5th anniversary.
I bought her a Mitsubishi Nicam VHS. At that time Nicam wasn't available where we lived, but she never noticed.

I seem to remember that they both cost about the same. The video went to the dump a few years ago (although it was still working at the age of 13) and the turntable is still used regularly.
