It was obvious that it was something serious. No presenter pulls out of a live prime time broadcast at short notice for a trivial reason and I refrained from commenting or replying on/to the "that's what you get with two women presenting"/ "wheres her husband ?" facile remarks which insensitive people rushed to post. Get well soon Matilda....and I hope Claudia and the family remain strong through this very distressing time.

My daughter suffered burns when she knocked a little cauldron of heated scented oil over herself when she was little, she climbed onto the mantelpiece to blow out the tealight under the cauldron. It burnt her chest & took months to heal. I only turned my back for seconds, it was one of the worst.moments of my life. I really wish Matilda a speedy recovery and my heart goes out to Claudia. There is no question that the right decisions were made & hope that the lovely Claudia is back when she feels its right.
To be fair, that's how it might have come across to many, because of the way the BBC announced it. The reaction from some might be, "Kid's get ill all the time, get her dad to look after her, "The show must go on."

Call me cynical, but if the BBC had said "She wouldn't be appearing because one of her children has had an accident." That would have respected their privacy and prevented any criticism.

But I think that's typical of the BBC, to attempt to "play it down a bit for the sake of the show."
or the Producers did not yet know the extent or nature of the injuries. Or Claudia did not want too much information given as some relatives have yet to be informed.

As I said the use of the word "accident" instead of "ill" would have meant less criticism on here.”

I'm struggling to see the logic in that sentence.

Get well soon Matilda, lots of love to the whole family. Any Injury to your kiddies, regardless of how blameless you are, takes forever to forgive yourself for.

Claudia compared my hubby's xmas do years back and wrote me a very lovely message as I was home in bed, poorly and feeling sorry for myself. She was suffering from flu that day but still did her job. I knew on Sat it was something more serious than sickness.

Very sorry for them all, especially that lovely little girl x

You really believe the producers didn't know the extent of the problem which was why Claudia wanted to be excused from co-presenting, "the biggest show in television?"

I'm so sorry to hear that. I'd like to join everyone else in wishing Claudia's daughter a safe recovery.

I too share your thoughts.

Hope little Matilda gets well very soon. It is a horrible thing to happen to a child and the whole family.

I would imagine that things were moving very fast medically, and information would be out of date almost instantly.

It may well have been an announcement made with the OK of the family to give them privacy for as long as they needed it.

As much as we may feel otherwise, it was none of our business then and it's not now either, really.

I hoped I was wrong on this when Claudia pulled out, thought it must have been serious. gosh, poor little girl, besides injuries, the trauma too for her, her parents and others including children that witnessed it.
Hope Matilda recovers well.

I hope this shuts up all those horrible people who said men would never be so unprofessional as to miss a show because a child was ill. Some things are more important than work.”

My thoughts too, some people must be feeling rather ashamed of rushing to criticise Claudia for putting her Child before her job.

Perhaps, at that stage, and so close to the incident, the BBC did not have the family's permission to say much more (if anything). After all, they too have a duty of care and confidentiality

I assumed the child must be in hospital since Claudia even appeared on the evening when she was a bridesmaid at Victoria Coren's wedding so I don't think she'd miss a show for trivial reasons.

In terms of what the BBC said - since they may not have had time to get in touch with all family and friends to tell them what had happened they may have asked for it to be played down. Also, it's unfortunate but had they said "accident' it may have attracted a lot more press attention at a time they really didn't want to have to cope with it.

Hope Matilda does make a full recovery.

Burns are just horrendous so my heart goes out to little Matilda. I shudder to think of the scenario....horrific.

Let's forget who said what last Saturday... for God's sake what does it matter now. Petty point scoring is so inappropriate at this time.

My thought exactly.
Claudia has always appeared to me as a very professional lady and I couldnt see her pulling out of a show unless it was serious ( although I was hoping at the time that it was not ).
Also as someone else has said, Tess face when she made the announcement on Saturday revealed more than she said.

Very best positive thoughts for Matilda, Claudia and the family and hoping the little one will soon be well enough to go home.

I hope everything gets back to normal as soon as possible for Claudia and her whole family and shame on those who are nitpicking at the BBC or anyone at all concerned about what we knew and when.

Thank you Claudia for letting us know now and I hope all reasonable people will now respect her privacy and understand that we will know more when and if it is right for us to know.

It will be good news when Claudia comes back as we will know things are returning to normal for her family.

Poor little thing and even more poor Claudia, she must have been in bits. I hope she wasn't seriously burned and recovers quickly.

Halloween - grrrrrr IS there anything good about this ridiculous commercial pseudo gothic horror nonsense we (retailers) have imported in recent years. I so wish SCD wouldn't pander to it and not juts because it makes for tackiest show of each series.

My daughter received a nasty burn on her shoulder when she was five whilst holding a sparkler. It burned right through her cardigan and dress. That was even me holding it with her.
I'm still thinking of that incident and how horrible it was, many, many years later. So I imagine poor little Matilda has had a dreadful experience that will stay with her for so long. I do hope she recovers from her injuries, very quickly.
Thankfully my daughters I jury wasn't that bad but it scared the life out of us at the time.
This is why I hate bonfires and fireworks.

My heart goes out to Claudia and her family - what a horrible thing to go through. I hope Matilda is alright.

I knew it was serious when Zoe sent love on yesterday's It Takes Two; it immediately indicated that whatever was up had not healed.
