The training looked competent but as I feared he is not maintaining movement when he is supporting his partner so it liked a bit start and stop - again. I hope they rectify that by Saturday. I'm sure he can do it.

Is the extreme slow/fast typical of pro level Rumba? Because it's like someone hits the fast forward button!”

The slow/fast light and shade is typical of rumba at all levels above beginner! As it is with all ballroom and Latin dances.

The timing for rumba is : 2 3 4 & 1; simplifying:- steps are made on the 2 3 4 & beats, and feet are still on the 1 count (though the body should never be static at all). As a dancer becomes more advanced, more syncopated steps will be used - as many as they like providing they keep within the correct timing. Sometimes when they move really fast (as Joanne can do when she spins) it doesn't look as if the 2 3 4 & 1 timing comes into it, but believe me it does, and an experienced dancer will tell the second the dance is out of time!! Hope this explains the fast forward button!?
