I envy that some people here can switch to EE or BT Mobile, I would love to do that one day. However, as my daily commute is so long and I live in NI where infrastructure is just well... crap. The only thing to keep my sanity intact during commute is watching Netflix, so I can easily go over 30GB per month. Last month, I even manage to use up to 42GB! Which for now ThreeUK are ok with (I guess). Plus, I do pop over to Republic of Ireland on a whim. However should ThreeUK crack down on data and reduce it to a max of 20GB per month to match other providers; I would cry, because it may force GiffGaff to respond the same way.
Fingers crossed that the 12GB per month All In One 20 PAYG package doesn’t become the All In One 25 (with the current All In One 25 becoming the All In One 30), and then a few months later the new All In One 25 they don’t reduce the amount of data to 6GB per month.

I took the option of an EE 25GB MBB sim when it was on offer for £15 a month and chucked it into the Data position on my dual sim phone, i've also recently signed up for a Life Mobile Sim £4.95 / month for 600 mins / 5000 texts which is more than enough for my limited / Emergency use in the sim 2 position. Total, just under £20 / month for 25GB of Data all of which can be tethered. Plus EE has 4G in half of the places I visit as opposed to 3 which doesn't have 4G in any of them!.

Both are on 30 day contacts, so if a better handset sim offer comes along for a similar monthly price as i'm paying now, I can give notice and leave. The EE 16GB / £20 offer came close, but the 9GB extra data per month that i'm getting currently for the same price using the two sim method is of more use to me than unlimited calls and texts.
I did that for a while with an EE 15GB MBB SIM and a voice SIM. Worked very well, as 2G is fine for voice/text, although now you can get some phones that are dual 3G/4G I believe (am still to see one personally though).

The downside is that you are a bit more limited in handset choice, but you can certainly get a lot more data that way. I even considered just having a very cheap PAYG SIM for voice calls, as my usage can be really low some months - and while I do still send texts, I don't have to as most people I communicate with are on some other IM service too. In many ways, IM is better because they can be reached on multiple devices.

I also realised only fairly recently that my EE MBB SIM can receive calls as normal. Indeed, it can actually make calls but they're at a crazy per minute charge. However, some people could possibly get by without the second SIM at all - using VoIP for calls and IM for 'texting'.

The Cubot X15 i'm using gives 3G / 4G in each Sim position and seems to do it well. As did the Cubot GT99 before, although Sim 2 was only 2G as you described but it worked for Calls etc.

The only negative with the newer X15 is that you lose the TF (SD) Card facility when both sims are in place as the TF Card shares the same location as the second sim, whilst the earlier GT99 had three positions, its not a drawback for me, but it may affect those who want two sims and also need more than the 16GB ROM available.

I made sure that I selected Data only in Sim management for the EE sim so there is no risk of accidentally making a call or sending a text over it!

Yes phone choices are limited for the Dual Sim feature and generally are Chinese in nature, but I don't need Wifi calling etc so its a £68 phone which does everything else I need, including saving me £10 a month on Three's offer .

Hopefully the networks will figure out soon that not all Data users need thousands of minutes of calls and unlimited texts.

Just to clarify, are you saying the X15 can use 3G/4G in both sim positions at the same time?

Or like most dual band phones do you chose one slot as 3G/4G and the other then drops to 2G only?

I've not tried 4G in sim 2 as I believe that the Life Mobile sim will only work with 3G, but certainly it runs 3G from this position - ie will access Data from both Sim 1 & Sim 2 when both are in place.

Have you tried a Three sim in slot 2 while having data set to slot 1?

Hopefully SIM only will continue to be competitive in the future, although who knows if Three will remain so with gradual price hikes instead of the types of promotions we've seen from VF and EE of late.

The world has gone mad when the two EU premium networks are doing more to innovate.
Isn't the lack of any great innovation from Three at the moment likely a result of the stasis the company is in whilst the proposed Hutchison takeover of O2 is ongoing?

On new connections I presume? I've just activated the Netflix option on my account and got the £89.88 credit added to a Netflix account.
On new plans and bundles, it is no longer available.

looked on my LG G3 and have used 3gb over network and 11gb over wifi so this 6gb plan looks like the next best thing if three force me to move from sim 200 all you can eat plan I pay £12.90 for.
I do like uploading to youtube.

and now had letter to say going up to £23 a month so looks like end of being on three might as well move to Id now.

Anybody know how I can reliably hack and bash an old standard size sim down to Nano size so it aligns correctly without a template or bolloxing it up?

I need to get my old 3 sim down to Nano size in order to fit it into a Cubot X15 in order to do the test above.

Got the dreaded letter today telling me they are phasing out my £15.90 a month unlimited data + 600 minutes plan. It worked out OK though since I rarely go over 2GB, so they gave me unlimited minutes and text plus 4Gb that I can use tethered if I need to for £14 a month. The only snag was a new 12 month contract as I was on a rolling basis before.

There are plenty of shops that will do that, the alternative is to do what I did when i needed a smaller Three sim card - go into a three store and ask, they did it there and then ( and gave me a free size adaptor as well) The old larger Sim stopped working about 10 minutes after

It's a free sim swap in any Three store, just take some ID and they do it in about 5 minutes (I did one last Thursday).

Ok, I'll give that a try, I didn't think Three would be interested in helping since i'm close to reaching the end of my notice period and have used my PAC but I will give it a go

I was a customer with them for 12 years.

They didn't care, gave me "deals" which were cheaper on their website or "deals" which were more expensive then what they were stated on their website.

They are happy to see you go, even though I didn't use a huge amount of data, except this month which I used around 30GB they said only because my broadband was down for 2 weeks.

While I agree with all your sentiments I'm unsure why you quoted me in your post .

Virgin will do a sim change but it’s not free.

Using the 3G or 4G connection on your phone and using the internet on your laptop or tablet. Either via USB cable or WiFi hotspot normally, but can also be using bluetooth.
