I left 3 mobile 6 months ago and switched over to Vodafone. I live in Greater London. It is like my phone has been given a complete new lease of life. 3 may give you unlimited data but whats the point if their service/quality is so poor that you cannot actually use it. The Vodaphone signal has been great with fast reliable 4G speeds. I pay £25.00 per month for unlimited mins and texts and 20GB data (all of which can be tethered) and also get spotify premium included. Its great!

Well, I've just spoken to three Glasgow and I was told there's absolutely nothing they can offer. There's no special discounts they can apply, no special tariffs. So your only choice is to leave three and take up a deal elsewhere.

The offer they have made to me is basically, a drastic reduction in data for the same money as I currently pay, or a less drastic reduction of data for a 30% tariff increase.

Companies this stupid deserve to lose my business.

Well, Im on the all you can eat everything SIM card deal for 30 quid- I use a Samsung j5 that I'd bought last year so that's me sorted. I have no home b/band or phone so use the mobile for everything including tethering to a laptop from time to time.
I use about 25/30 gb a month of data on average. The 4G is faster now here in Cheltenham, I notice, since I've taken this deal on

I wouldn't have minded if they'd said 'look, we can't offer AYCE data any more for this price, so we'll have to restrict your service to 8GB'.
Particularly in my case, as I did not abuse the AYCE (even on a busy month I use only about 5gb or so).

The only unique selling point is Feel At Home. On looking at other providers, their roaming data options are stuck in the past!

That's great, but why did you slate the other networks when they all offer a far superior service?

Sure, currently, you have to pay something extra but when that ends within the EU/EEA Three's offering is going to be the one that looks decidedly dated.

Completely agree John. Three's data is not free, it's restricted data is free with no option to buy unrestricted.

Three need to offer a choice, but in doing so would be admitting to what is currently happening.

In France Three only partner with Bouyges or Free. EE/Vodafone allow OrangeF/SFR as well giving a choice if one provider is saturated locally.

Even without the heavy throttling, I don't think Three could match the others consistently.

I expect Three to lose credibility for roaming as the others improve their offers.

For my current stay I've had a Three SIM in the car WiFi, but pretty much every day I've ended up using Vodafone at £3 per day to avoid waiting for maps/directions to load.

I would like to see some of Three's web browsing features being implemented by the others. Less data use for web pages and faster load times works quite well.

Because I don't think they do Jon. Feel at home was a really useful service - you didn't have to do anything, opt in, opt out, bolt on data, or pay an extra penny. Nothing's for nothing of course, so the throttling is understandable - as long as I can map, facebook, access google calendars and browse, it's all good!

In the US however, there is simply no contest. Nobody can match three for roaming, other than iD Mobile which is the same service anyway. I saved some ridiculous figure in roaming fees, like £2k on a trip to NYC last May alone!

Incidentally, I must thank you for your useful article regarding roaming options. It was very helpful in my deliberation of seeking alternative networks. You give o2 a bit of a 'slating', but I don't blame you

After being left unhappy with not getting loyalty discount I emailed Three with a complaint then Three phoned me back the next day but I missed the call. Anyway I phoned them back and got in touch with the Three complaints department where they agreed to finally give me a loyalty discount and now I am paying £17 a month instead of £20 for the 30gb hotspot package.

Good for you mate. I had no luck with them, so have today ported my number over to EE.
Silly thing about it - I wasn't in the market for a new provider - was quite happy with 3, and would've stayed had they been able to offer the 8gb tariff at the same or similar price.

They wouldn't, so I've been all over the providers, and got a good sim only deal with EE using a Quidco £70 cashback deal!

- 800MHz 4G.. well, EE will have this later in the year.
- Feel at Home.. besides the fact it's free, you can now get half a gig of full 4G-speed data for £3 a day.
- VoLTE.. better prioritisation when it launches, with 4G 800 above 3G.
- Coverage.. the same 3G coverage at least as Three, and more 4G (even without 800) as I doubt there are many MBNL sites where Three added 4G and EE didn't.

The main loss for people is losing unlimited data. If you don't want unlimited, Three loses a lot of its appeal.

I'm keeping a SIM going with Three for AYCE data but am beginning to wonder why I need it.

How many minutes?

I have unlimited minutes plus unlimited texts plus 30GB tethered for £20 on a 12 month contract so I'll feel cheated if you have the same package for £3/month less

I only get 200 minutes but I don't use the phone function on my iPhone much anyway. I only use my iPhone for the Internet, making videos and music. So as long as I am getting unlimited data and 30gb hotspot then I am happy.

I'm assuming every mast would be swamped in London so there's that problem.
I agree that if I lose unlimited data, I would move to EE if they get 800MHz in Pudsey, Leeds or I could move to the 200MB a month free plan as I used to just have the 321 plan before and used less than 10p a month mostly making use of WiFi.

I do go over 200 minutes some months so this offer wouldn't be ideal but 600 minutes for say £18.50/month would be the sweet spot for me. Still I'm happy with unlimited minutes & 30GB Hotspot for £20/month.

I spoke to Customer Service a couple of days ago complaining that I had been forced to move onto the £30 unlimited calls, texts and data sim without being offered any customer loyalty discount.

Customer Service were useless, so I asked to speak to the Customer Retentions team. They looked into things for me and said that I should have been offered the unlimited calls, texts and 30GB of data for £20 a month (instead of £30).

As this had not been offered, they gave me a £10 credit for this month for being put on the unlimited calls texts and data sim.

They weren't able to offer a discount on any other tariff. I have however, found a way to get the £30 sim for £24 a month( via automatic cash back). If anyone is interested, please send me a PM and I'll give you the details.

What retentions do is try to sell you the idea that your average usage will be well within the limits of your plan - but this is no good when they run out. I argued till I was blue in the face that I needed 8gb since several months of the year I go over the 4gb they were trying to sell me, but they weren't having any of this.

My girlfriend really got stung by this. She was persuaded to take a plan that had 600 voice mins, where previously she had unlimited, based on her usage. When she had used them up, she called three to complain, and after an hour on the phone, they offered her the unlimited minutes/8GB deal, BUT, she had to wait 6 days for this new plan to come into action, leaving her unable to make calls in the interim. They wouldn't even allow her to buy some minutes so she could make calls. She would've left but for the fact she'd just signed a 12month deal.

I've left three for EE - something I didn't want to do, and the EE tariff is slightly more expensive. But I've no desire to reward Three for appalling customer treatment.

I'm strongly considering BT mobile myself. The £80 amazon gift card more or less takes the 20GB plan down to £18 a month, so not much more than I pay now with 3.

But I will get a hell of a lot more 4G - though BT doesn't appear to have VoLTE/wifi calling at all yet, but then I don't have a compatible phone anyway.

I might miss the ability to tether, though

It really varies on where you live though. My Mrs has just changed to EE (from Three), we find in our area that the signal with Three is generally better than EE but there's not much in it. Whenever we have a signal with Three it's very fast and always useable. What she's finding on EE is that she always has a 3G or 4G signal but often the throughput is slow.

She doesn't word it in that way, to her she just sees buffering on YouTube and a long delay for Google search or maps results to come up. And she says (quite correctly) "this never happened on Three, I wish I never switched".

I know a few places where Three can get 60-80Mbps and EE is half that, but it's quite rare. Of course if it happens at your home/work then it doesn't really matter.

By and large, EE should be as good - or better - than Three. The exception being if you haven't disabled 2G and the phone falls back to 2G, where Three would have no choice but to cling on to 3G (or perhaps now 4G 800).
