I don't really get the need for unlimited data. I connect to local hotspots when out and about and only rely on the mobile data when I have too.
I used to think like that, but now I'd only use a hotspot as a last resort (or if it's stupidly fast) as 9 times out of 10, it's faster to use mobile data than Wi-Fi. At home, I'm currently favouring EE as I get 40-50Mbps down, 35-40Mbps up compared to 6.5Mbps down, 1Mbps up on ADSL!

And in public places, hotels etc, Wi-Fi can always be so hit and miss as to whether you can even maintain a solid, stable, connection. 5GHz improves things, but it's still not ideal.

But what does that extra speed *actually* get you. Once it reaches a minimum amount to be able to stream video it's latency that matters more I would have said.

I never use public WiFi. It's invariably slower than my 3G/4G connection.

I go through aywhere between 10GB and 25GB of data per month, depending on what I'm doing work-wise and where I'm travelling to. With that in mind, EE simply doesn't cut it right now. If they did refresh their tariffs and brought their data offerings into the 21st Century, then I'd also assume they would be too expensive.

EE has an excellent network, there is no doubt about it, but they need to offer more data now. I would probably consider moving back if they upped their game a bit (although I find 2G backup more of a hindrance than a help).

What do you use the data on?

Streaming Internet radio/my own music collection when walking the dog (around an hour a day normally) as well as in the car, web browsing, work stuff, the odd bit of Sky Go/BBC iPlayer. That's about it really.

The radio/music streaming will take up the vast majority of all that data, obviously.

People want it (as opposed to genuinely "needing" it, so that they can watch Netflix, etc on the way to/from work etc and also so that they can tether whenever they want to, to either do the same, or use it whenever they "want" to (for whatever reason).

IMO, pople have become accustomed to it and found things they can to to take advantage of it, rather than having a genuine "need" for it.

I had the One Plan up until recently, but once I heard things were changing (and the lack of 4G) I moved to EE and I've since discovered that I don't even use 5 gig of data per month (even though I have a 10 gig allowance).

Unlimited data is nice on a handset, but in reality fairly unnecessary when there's a 4 gig tethering allowance.

I think 3 will move to the 'allowance' model, where you get a set amount of data and you can use it all to watch Netflix on your handset, tether every single gigabyte to watch it on another device, or use it to do both.
They should let users roll over non used Gb up to a maximum of say 3 months, I am sure some people were just wasting it for the sake of it.

T-Mobile and now AT&T are rolling over data in the USA. I wonder if any will do that in the UK soon?

What you forget is the disparity in pricing. We used to have rollover allowances here but in those days you only got 300 minutes for your £40. Now with unlimited minutes/texts and 1-10GB of data there is little financial margin to be had to offer rollover.

Look at the cost of mobile use anywhere else in the world and you'll see we're one of the cheapest markets on the planet, even compared to Ireland, Isle of Man and the Channel Islands.

That's a fair point but now all operators are offering 4G, I expect things will get a bit more competitive in the future. Nobody wants to cut prices, so it will all be about offering more for the same money.

My second plan still hasn't been moved on yet. I upgraded my original sim only to a Z3 contract last month. The letter I received must have only been for one of my plans?

Any body else been moved off the old One Plan? I have been out of contract since October last year and no contact. I'm not complaining! Just wondering if this is all still happening or maybe Three have moved those on they wanted to?

same here, out of contract since November.
Just tried to look at the current sim only deals, and the page times out with an error that they are doing maintenance.
new deals on the way?

All the 1 month plans were showing (and still are), the 600 minutes AYCE plan is there, it's £20 a month.

Update: Now I can't see any 30 day tariffs! There's not even an option to select 1 month or 12 months.

So I just see four plans for 12 months;

(low to high)

500MB, 200 minutes - £7
1GB, 600 minutes - £10
AYCE data, 200 minutes - £15
AYCE data, unlimited minutes - £25

Very, very odd.

I tried different browers and cleared history prior to use. Using IE I don't see any 1 month plans (no option to filter 1 month either), using Firefox I see numerous 1 month plans (with option to filter) and using Opera I see only one 1 month option (with option to filter).

Update: Cleared "all history" rather than just "recent history" on Firefox now there is no longer any 1 Month options showing and the filter option is gone.
