three have made a decision that our tariffs are costing them too much. that's their call - they're a business not a charity. They should have just said that and yes prices are effectively going up.. no hiding.
I do think they could have offered at least 2 plans with the £3 discount, (like the popular £20 option) or could have analyzed individual bill patterns to offer the closest match
- £20
they're still the only network offering AYCE data”
I think they have every right, but have to consider the consequences. As I said in my blog, it's generally unheard of to force people off a contract.
Unlimited tethering was the issue here. So, write to us all and say our terms are changing and we're losing that - or getting 8/12GB per month capped. Take it or leave it.
My £10 discount was 'for life [of the contract]' but they could still increase line rental in line with inflation, before applying the discount.
It makes little sense to have people leaving, even if just doing so to spite the network, when it will hit subscriber numbers. Yes, it will improve the ARPU if I leave, or if I accept a doubling of my line rental, but customers can vote with their feet and they are doing that.
Yes Three has AYCE data, but that's not the be all and end all. If people now take the time to look at their usage, go into their data counters and see the average, many will find that they don't come close to needing unlimited. Chances are the ones needing unlimited were the ones tethering.
The person I would have spoken to about this within Three left last year (to EE) and I can see why he went. They are under orders to make money, but this sort of thing is silly.
We've obviously been talking about this on here for some time - right back to when the One Plan was officially ended some 18 months ago - but it's picked up now, not just because I got my letter, but because they've obviously decided to go in for the kill and accelerate the changes.
I wonder what Three will do after all of this extra publicity?
