This is the only way to explain things in the Whoniverse.

It's actually Steven Moffat's view, not the Doctor's view.

Mozzy writes it, the actor says it.

Ummmm... Yes, obviously. They are all actors portraying parts written for them... Nobody in their right mind is disputing that. Really grown-up of you to point that out, too.

But in the Who-niverse, whatever is said by the Doctor is what is the truth (at the time). Until he contradicts himself (sorry - "until another writer feeds the actor playing the latest incarnation of the fictional character: The Doctor" - is that okay? <rolleyes>) in the show, then that is the current truth.

And actually, as Moff writes what the Doctor says, then both views are the same.

But you do get that I know it's a show, right? And you get how fiction works, right?

I wonder what number incarnation Missey was...After all The Master got a new regeneration cycle during the Time War. Strange she didn't mention the drums...

And as Moffat is the showrunner (like him or not), his word is law.

If he says he's the XXX incarnation and gives a logic behind it, then he is.

If he says Time Lords can change gender, then they can.

As the other poster said, that is how fiction works - and unless the showrunner changes and says something to counteract that, then it's canon, and it's fact in the Whoniverse. That is indisputable and I have no idea why people are even debating it.

Me too. I have never accepted the rubbish notion that 10 used up two regenerations. He did not. Moffat can try and retcon it all he likes but it is just not true.

I (grudgingly) accept the retcon existence of the War Doctor but I don't think he was necessary. His scenes could have been shot using Paul McGann as the 8th Doctor and worked just as well.

All imho of course.

Explain why there is a 3rd, 4th, 5th etc..... Doctor then.



If a Time Lord can do what the 10th Doctor did with no consequences then no Time Lord would be past their second incarnation.

1.Get Mortally Wounded
2.Regenerate into 2nd Incarnation
3.Cut off finger (hell toetails would probably work) which grows back.
4.Next time you are mortally wounded
5.Heal yourself
6.Put extra energy into Finger
7.Do not use up one of your limited regenerations


Next time mortally wounded - Repeat from 5.


So according to you Time Lords can live forever without ever having to use up more than one regeneration.

...The current incarnation played by Peter Capaldi is known as The Twelfth Doctor but it was explicitly stated by Matt Smith's Eleventh Doctor in The Time Of The Doctor that there had been thirteen of him.

The only niggle I have with it is that the 11th incarnation - Series 2-4's Tenth Doctor, (not the post-metacrisis Tenth Doctor from the specials ) didn't make an appearance in the scene where they all turned up in The Day Of The Doctor

It's simple ...

Each incarnation (i) ends with a regeneration (r) so the number of incarnations is always one higher than the number of regenerations...

...and to begin with, in naming the Doctor as The "nth" Doctor, n was equal to i.

..But that was only for the duration of the classic series and the Eighth Doctor's "lifetime" until The Night Of The Doctor (looking at it from the Doctor's point of view) ..

Because the name "War Doctor" (also known either to himself or others as "The Renegade" or "The Warrior" at times) is taken by the 9th incarnation, Then the following (10th) incarnation is the "Ninth Doctor" and so from Rose onwards (from the Doctor's pov) n now equals i-1

Then when the Series 2-4 Tenth Doctor (11th incarnation) regenerates for the first time and keeps the same face, he also keeps the same name, despite now being the 12th incarnation .... so from Journeys End to The Day Of The Doctor n=i-2

Which makes The Eleventh Doctor the "13th incarnation" (as stated in The Time Of The Doctor)

...and thus the Twelfth Doctor is the "14th incarnation" ...... whether you like it or not
