Although John Stape remains one of the best Characters Corrie has ever created, I think that they did drop the ball on his storyline a lot, and in the end it just became incredibly silly, whilst it had the opportunity to become a really dark storyline.

Here's how I would rewrite some of it:

I'd start off with having Peter Barlow discover the truth about Colin Fishwick and the identity theft; he immediately confronts John about it in the Bookies, but John lies to him and tells Peter to stay out of his private business. But Peter being Peter, he refuses to leave it alone, and so, he digs into John's past. Whilst doing so, he discovers that Fishwick's life savings have been wiped out, and suspects that John had something to do with it.

Instead of Confronting John however, he goes behind his back and goes to talk to Fishwick's mother, Joy. He learns that Joy hasn't spoken to her son in three years, and believes that he had emigrated to Canada. He is very torn at this point on what to do, but again, he doesn't confide in anyone, especially his own wife Leanne, about his suspicious.

On the night of the Tram Crash, Peter is celebrating his Stag Party and wedding with Leanne with Kirk, Ashley, Ciaran, Ken, Lloyd, Steve, Graeme, Nick, and David. Whilst Fiz is at Leanne's hen party with the likes of Carla, Deirdre, Gail and Eileen. John learns that Charlotte Hoyle has been stalking him, and to make matters even worse finds out that Peter knows everything about Fishwick and the Identity Theft. Charlotte breaks into his and Fiz's house and begins to trash the place; John returns home after a quiet drink at the rovers, and accidentally kills Charlotte by hitting her with a hammer. He moves her body out of the house, walks into the Joinery and goes to find Peter.

Whilst at the Joinery, he finally confronts Peter about what he knows. The Alcoholic Bookmaker tells John where to go, but Stape doesn't take too kindly to his words, and spikes Peter's Orange Juice with a Pill, making him tipsy without drinking any Alcohol, and leads to Peter making a right fool of himself out of everybody, including Ken. Suddenly, as John's about to leave, the Joinery explodes!

To be continued...
