Sony Xperia Z3 Compact

Hi,

Has anyone got this phone?

Looking on the Z3 thread here - http://forums.digitalspy.co.uk/showt...php?p=75272458 it seems a few people do.

I was going to buy one - but I'm a bit put off by the amount of people reporting the screen / back cracking so easily. Anyone got any experience of dropping it / any problems??

I have one, had it for a few weeks now after I sold my HTC One M8 (too big). Lovely little phone, it just works.

And no, I haven't had any issues at all, though I can imagine how it could quite easily be dropped as its quite slippery (though a decent case will sort that out).

Some people have reported it cracking whilst it is just sat on their desk / bedside table - not even dropping it!

For example plenty in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/z3/g...t2904248/page3

it's really putting me off - by and large I'm sure not all of them are destined to crack - but if I end up with one.....one hefty bill to repair

Haven't experienced anything like that... its got a bit hot when recording 4K video, but only as much as my old Xperia Z did when browsing the web.

Based on my experience I'd happily recommend it.

can you see the screen in bright light? Maybe not the right time of year to ask...

I find it fine as long as the auto brightness is turned on. I tend to keep the brightness turned up to max, which is fine with this phone because the battery life is so good - 2 days of average usage between charges.

But yeah, how it would be in very bright summer sunshine I'll have to wait to find out.

Can't comment on the Compact but on the full size Z3 you can see it extremely well in bright sunlight. It's quite amazing compared to the Z2 and Z1, and most other phones I've got or had.

More bad news for Sony. They've revised their smartphone shipment target from 50m down to 43m and now down to 41m. They shipped 39.1m smartphones in FY2013 so 41m in FY2014 isn't great when the global smartphone market is due to grow by 20-25% this year.

A shame as I really like their phones, but have long felt that releasing a new flagship every six months has actually put a lot of people off.

Yup, and Sony will be changing their plans accordingly.

We won't see a 6 month cycle any more. Sony will now be referring to a 12 month cycle for their flagship handsets and they're going to be cutting down on the number of low and mid range phones in their inventory.

You read my article last month then! It can't come soon enough. Nobody wants to feel their new purchase will be unnecessarily replaced after six months when signing a two year contract.

My neighbour has just purchased the Z3C and I have to say I'm blown away by the quality of this phone, actively considering a purchase myself.

When you look at the Sony then the iPhone, the Sony is easily equal to the offering from Apple, plus you have the advantage that is Android.

I love the 'Throw' technology whereby if you have a DLNA TV one can simply swipe a video from the phone and it plays on the TV . Similar to AirPlay but no ATV required.

I would echo what others have said though, get a case, back is slippy.

haha!

I should have probably updated this with things I've heard since, although I still don't know exactly how and when they'll be changing - as the feeling is the Z3 isn't sufficient to last until Sept/Oct 2014 - but Sony does want its annual refresh in the autumn.

Thus, it's possible we'll still get a Z4 in March and a Z5 in September and THEN switch. Thus, the Z5 will be a major leap (in theory).

I don't have much sympathy for Sony though, as it created the mess (albeit as Sony Ericsson) in the first place.

Has anybody ever forgiven Sony for their rootkit scandal?

Good grief that was years ago. Glad to see you have moved on though. . What about Serbia for lighting the match that started WW1.
