Hi
I've just replaced by old failing Humax 9300T with a Freeview 2000T.
I'm trying to get the HUMAX TV PORTAL working, but each time I select it, it says "Cannot connect to network. Please check your internet connection or network setting". I've tried this both with the Humax dongle connected to my wifi, and also with a LAN cable connected direct to the router. Both methods happily established a connection to my network when setting them up, but the HUMAX TV PORTAL option just won't play.
Any thoughts what I'm doing wrong?
Cheers.

Could you clarify what you mean by :

I've tried this both with the Humax dongle connected to my wifi...............
I've read you can get this problem because of interference from the Humax itself, or from the TV. If so, one solution is to plug in a USB extender, with the dongle at the end of that.

Hi Jsmith99

I mean using the Humax-supplied USB-Dongle to establish a connection to my wireless router. I've tried plugging it into both the front and the rear USB-sockets (the rear one is only inches away from where my wireless router is located), but neither worked. I've not tried a USB-extender, but presumably if the issue was just interference from the Humax unit itself, then the problem would have been resolved when I tried connecting instead via a LAN-cable between Humax and router, but that didn't resolve the issue either.

Sorry, I misread your post. I thought you meant that it worked with an ethernet cable, but not with the dongle.

How do you know that they established a connection, was it something shown on the screen?

And have you created an account as per page 34 of the User's Manual?

(I installed my 2000T on Wednesday, but I haven't got as far as buying a dongle for it. The only problem I've had was on Thursday when there was no sound when I brought it out of standby. This is apparently a common problem, solved by switching it off and on again. That cured it, but if it happens again I may take it back to John Lewis.)

When you set up the connection in the first place, it scans for your wireless-router. If it finds it (which it did), it prompts you for your router-password. I keyed this in, and it confirmed that the connection was set up ok. (Obviously if you go via a LAN cable it bypasses the scanning/credentials check, as it can just pick up the IP-address/etc for itself.) But either way the set-up of the connection works fine. It's only when I come to use it via the TV PORTAL option that it doesn't work.

ACTUALLY, STRIKE THAT! I'VE JUST RETRIED, AND NOW IT WORKS!! Weird! I've not changed anything since last night. Maybe, then, the connection was indeed working all along, and it was their central PORTAL service which was down.

Re your other points, yeah I'd set up an account via their website, but I hadn't been able to register my specific device, as you need a Reg Code for that, and until you get into PORTAL, you can't get the Reg Code off your device. But that's all now done too. I guess I finally get to find out what I can actually do with this service that I've been trying until now to get working...!

By the way, I have also seen the no-sound issue too, which I also resolved by powering off/on. Didn't realise it was a known issue. Another lovable quirk of another Humax box eh? (e.g. the infamous "Family Guy" issue on my old 9300!)

Let me know what they say if you do take it back because of the sound issue (I got mine at JL too). I've only had it a couple of days, so I dunno yet whether it's gonna recur and/or whether I'm gonna find it too irritating!!

Many thanks.

I'm glad you got it all sorted; the Humax is far better than the BT box I replaced with it, but some of the terminology in the manual isn't too clear.

I did a search on 'Humax "no sound"', and that's when I found all the posts about the problem happening on various models. The commonest explanation seems to be a 'handshaking' failure on the HDMI, and certainly I may have taken the Humax out of standby a little too soon.

I now take the TV out of standby, then after a minute take the Humax out, then wait another minute before I switch the TV to the Humax. This seems to stop the problem happening.

That's the only fault so far (apart from the Humax sound being quieter than TV sound), though there are a number of facilities I haven't tested yet!

A shame to have go through that faff with the on/off sequence of the TV and Humax, but - as you say with your old BT box - it's still better than anything else out there.

The only remaining problem I have is the signal quality of some of the BBC channels (at least BBC4), which didn't seem to be a problem with the 9300, even though all the connections/aerial/etc are the same as before, but early days yet. Shall have to see whether that's an ongoing issue, and whether I can get round it (maybe by manually tuning to just certain multiplexes), but other than that, all seems well.

(NB: I have to say that - having now got PORTAL working & seen what it can do - I'm somewhat underwhelmed by it! But, again, it's still early days, so I don't wanna judge it too harshly just yet! )
