Many people have come on here and criticised the script writers for having Johnny taking an interest in the local residents and looking ater them. But that is exactly what gangster used to do (don't know if they still do). Billy Murray knew the Kray twins and that is what they did, they looked after their people.

Yeh he is realistic, anyone who says otherwise doesn't know what they're talking about, including critics who call him a "phoney gangster"

I don't care whether he is realistic, but I do care that he is boring.

I just get tired of hearing his name mentioned every other minute, and seeing him go round expecting everyone to highly respect him...why should they? He seems a bit slimy to me! Andy was funnier!

I think he's a very realistic character. His is one of the best thought out in years, and they've given him a proper history.

I believe his 'sort' would look after the locals - it goes both ways... keeps the neighborhood reasonably trouble-free, but also, if the police started taking too much of an interest in him and quizzing the locals about him, they'd only ever describe him as a pillar of the community and be quite genuine about it (he gave us a place to live, he visited when my daughter was attacked etc).

Andy 'unter was the phoney gangster. He was nothing more than a thug and a despicable man.

Enjoyed what he did to Sam though.

Johnny is a gentleman - He's cool, calm and collected, but definitely nobody's fool. Firstly and formostly a businessman, he's not afraid to step outside of the law if he feels he has to.

He may be a realistic gangster, but I just don't like that sort of character in a soap, it just doesn't seem believable to me. Everyone goes around saying we owe this/that/the other to Johnny Allen in the same way as people went around saying "good old alfie" all the time. It's the constant mentions of characters names, trying to get them worshipped, that I dislike.

^LMAO.

Who cares if people call him a plastic gangster . 99% of crooks these days will cut you without thinking twice, not be all nicey nicey.
So, the character isnt "realistic" after all

Exactly. The OP compared Johnny to the Kray twins. That's one of the problems with Eastenders - it is still 'living in the 60s'.

He has got a lot of realism about him but, as its soap world, they have to balance the realistic character with unrealistic plots.

The basis that he was probably a dodgy character who lived outside of the law back in the 60's and 70's then invested his cash into becoming a legitimate businessman is very real. Where I live, there are a lot like that about.
He is more based on a 60s type of villain in the way he always makes sure shes got the locals onside and looks out for the regular people.

The unrealistic side to me is the way hes bought up the quare in about 5 minutes and the fact that someone like that would ever consider living back in the East End. Men like him moved out to Brentwood and Epping as soon as they could afford to.

So did I, I thought he was so funny, but of course all that gets overlooked on these boards, because there was a Ferreira in the shot lol

I loved the way he spoke to them as well.

Also liked the comment about 'renewing my aquaintance with the old bill'. Harking back to his days as Don Beech maybe?

I only laughed at the lameness of the Ferreira family. I don't think Johnny said anything particularly clever, or funny! And the way he spoke to Danny was just nasty and disrespectful, and his apology wasn't funny in its reluctance either! I just don't like the way he thinks he deserves all this respect and fear etc but doesn't show it to other people! I know Andy was like that too in some ways, but he didn't really go round pretending to be a nice person anyway!

Also I can't stand Tina she is rubbish so far and knowing Johnny's storyline will have to revolve to some extent around her and that brat tthat turned up...well doesn't leave me looking forward to the upcoming storylines -
I know she is new, so maybe she will grow on me, maybe Johnny will too. But so far Tina just seems boring, stereotyped and all the lads (Minty, Billy,Gary,Danny) supposedly fancying her was a bit poor. She reminds me abit of DEbbie? the Baldwin wife in corrie!
